    Abstract: An apparatus for producing a plurality of cast products includes a plurality of molds, and a casting apparatus which casts products in the molds. A multi-level pallet carries the molds containing the cast products on at least two vertical levels. A loading apparatus loads the molds onto the multi-level pallet. A conveyor moves the multi-level pallet through a cooling area which is sufficient to cool the cast products for removal from the molds. An unloading apparatus unloads the molds from the multi-level pallet. In a method of producing a plurality of cast products, the products are cast in a plurality of molds. The molds are loaded onto a multi-level pallet which carries the molds on at least two vertical levels. The multi-level pallet is conveyed through a cooling area which is sufficient to cool the cast products for removal from the molds. After cooling, the molds are unloaded from the multi-level pallet.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a system and method for the automated spin-casting production of molded articles. The system includes a casting turntable and a processing turntable which are rotatively mounted, immediately adjacent to one another. The casting turntable has several spin modules mounted thereon for rotatively supporting mold assemblies. Casting preparation and pouring mechanisms are mounted around the periphery of the casting turntable. The turntable indexes the mold assemblies and positions the assemblies for preparation, pouring and solidification of the cast products. The processing turntable receives the mold assemblies and solidified castings from the casting turntable. Multiple processing stations are mounted around the periphery of the processing table for the removal of the castings from the mold assemblies and preparation of the mold assemblies for additional casting operations. The mold assemblies are returned to the casting table from the processing table for additional casting processes.

    Abstract: A blow head or gassing head of an automatic core machine, which produces sand casting cores in a core box is formed of a downwardly opening box-like frame having a bottom closure plate. The heads may be alternatively used to respectively deposit a sand and binder material or to flow gas into a sand-filled core box cavity positioned beneath the head. The closure plates are provided with openings through which either the sand-binder material may drop from the blow head frame into the core box cavity or through which gas may flow from the gassing head frame into the cavity. The plate is loosely positioned beneath the frame and is clamped tightly upwardly against the bottom peripheral edge of the head by a spaced pair of elongated, rigid rails which engage and support the opposite side edges of the plate. A rail holding a clamping mechanism selectively moves the rails upwardly for clamping the plate against the frame and downwardly to free the plate relative to the frame.

    Abstract: A pouring ladle (12) includes a horizontal chamber (22) having an inlet (24) at one end thereof for admitting molten metal into the chamber (22) and a bottom-poured nozzle (28) at an opposite end for discharging the metal into an underlying mold (30). A coreless induction heater (56) surrounds the chamber (22) for heating metal as it flows from the inlet (24) to the outlet nozzle (28). The induction heater (56) may be operated simultaneously with the pouring of metal and be used to pour treated ductile iron without plugging the inductor (56).

    Abstract: A sand mold forming machine has a cope frame aligned above a drag frame with a pattern arranged between, and within, the frames. A sand filling is positioned in each of the frames. The sand fillings are compacted by squeeze plates overlaying the open, upper and lower ends of the cope and drag respectively. The squeeze plates are moved towards each other to compress the sand within the frames and against the pattern. Each of the squeeze plates is made of numerous, separate sections that are mounted upon a movable platten. The sections, of each plate, may move together as a group by moving the plattens or, the sections may be individually moved, relative to the plattens. Thus, pre-selected area of the sand fillings may be compacted more or less, as desired, than adjacent areas by separately moving opposing sections relative to the overall squeezing movements of the squeeze plate.

    Abstract: A thin wall inner is positioned within the circular bowl of a sand muller to overlay the interior mulling surface upon which foundry sand is placed and is mulled by a plow blade that rotates within the bowl over its mulling surface. The bowl surface is annular and ring-like in shape. The liner is formed of a number of similar segments which are arranged together in edge to edge relationship to form an annular, ring-like cover over the bowl surface. The liner segments are secured to the bowl by bolts which extend through aligned holes in the segments and in the bowl. Most of the outer surface of the liner is spaced a short distance from the bowl surface by means of thin pads formed on the outer surface of the liner, around the area of the bolt holes. The pads contact the bowl surface, to provide a space between the remainder of the liner and the bowl surface. This space is filled with a grout-like material for bonding the liner to the bowl and for shock absorbing and load distribution.

    Abstract: Metals castings, having a number of internal passageways which open at different surface portions of the castings, are mounted upon a horizontally axised wheel-like frame. The frame is intermittently rotated and momentarily stopped so that castings are rotated at times and stationary at times. During the times that the castings are stationary, they are simultaneously subjected to either an externally applied vibration or to a momentary, several millisecond long, high pressure burst of air through their respective passageways. The alternating vibrations and momentary bursts of air loosen and remove the sand and other casting debris contained within the passageways. Additionally, the changing angularity of the castings, due to the rotation, coupled with the vibrations and bursts of air, dislodge such sand and debris from the walls and, also, downwardly out of the passageways.

    Abstract: A thin wall liner is positioned within the circular bowl of a sand muller to overlay the interior mulling surface upon which foundry sand is placed and is mulled by a plow blade that rotates within the bowl over its mulling surface. The bowl surface is annular and ring-like in shape.     Abstract: A relatively hard sand cake, containing a metal casting cavity, is formed in a flask comprising cope and drag frame sections by filling and compacting sand in the drag against the drag half of a cavity-forming pattern, then arranging the drag with the cavity opening upwards, applying the cope upon the drag and filling and compacting sand in the cope against the cope half of the cavity-forming pattern. The sand-filled cope is lifted from the drag for removal of the pattern and is re-applied to form the casting cavity in the sand cake. Next, selected wall corner joints of both the cope and the drag frames are separated and opened to laterally expand the walls of the frames away from the sand cake surfaces. This releases the sand cake from the cope and drag so that it may be removed from the flask for later casting molten metal in its casting cavity. At least two of the corners of each of the cope and drag frames include a separate corner piece against which the adjacent ends of the frame walls are abutted.

    Abstract: A flaskless sand mold is formed in vertically aligned, sand-filled cope and drag flasks having a pattern board arranged between them so that pattern portions mounted upon the board extend upwardly into the cope and downwardly into the drag. The sand in the drag flask is supported upon a vertically guided platen which covers the bottom of the drag flask, and the cope is covered with a squeeze plate. The sand fillings are compressed against the pattern board and the pattern portions by the platen and squeeze plate to form compacted cope and drag sand molds with aligned cavities. Then the platen, supporting the drag sand mold, is lowered a short distance while the drag flask is held immovably against the cope flask. Thereafter, while the platen, with the drag sand mold, continues to lower, the drag frame is simultaneously lowered into a rest position upon a track-like support.

    Abstract: A machine for repeatedly impacting metal castings in order to clean the castings of debris, such as sand, is formed of a wheel-like frame which is rotatably mounted upon a horizontal axle. The frame is divided into four equally spaced apart compartments which provide two pair of opposed compartments. The radially innermost wall of each compartment is formed of a metal plate arranged parallel to the axle so that the plate of the uppermost compartment is horizontal and forms a floor-like support for the casting which is then located in that compartment. Each plate is loosely supported upon springs and has an exposed end portion that extends transversely outwardly of the frame. An impact hammer is arranged to repeatedly apply blows that are directed radially towards the axle against the exposed end portion of the uppermost plate for vibrating the plate and for transmitting the forces of the blows to the casting for loosening debris clinging thereto.

    Abstract: A machine for automatically blowing debris, such as sand, out of cavities within engine block and similar type castings which have side openings connected to end openings to form internal cavities. The machine has a ferris-wheel-like frame arranged to rotate around a horizontal axis. The frame is divided into a number of horizontally opening compartments, each arranged to receive and hold a single casting. A dirty casting is loaded, horizontally endwise, while the frame is momentarily stationary, into the compartment which is then located in the lowermost position. Thereafter, the frame is rotated until the next compartment is located in the lowermost position, at which point the rotation is stopped so that the clean casting in the now lowermost compartment is horizontally removed endwise and is replaced with the next dirty casting. The stop, followed by the rotation, sequence is repeated so that each casting, within each compartment, is indexably rotated around the axis.
