  • Publication number: 20030015203
Abstract: A method of introducing continuous lengths of filament into the body in surgical procedures in which it is desirable to place a significant amount of material into the body through a small portal. The material so introduced may serve to bulk a tissue or cavity of the body or to occlude a vas, as well as to introduce diagnostic or therapeutic agents into a site in the body. A device for implementing the method has a mechanism for feeding the filament through a conduit in such a manner that sufficient force is applied to the filament that it is forced into the desired site. In one embodiment, a system of reciprocating cannulae and synchronized grippers is used to supply the requisite force to the filament.

  • Patent number: 5374252
Abstract: A safety pneumoneedle through which the abdomen can be inflated with fluid such as insufflating gas is described. The pneumoneedle comprises a housing having front and rear ends, exterior surfaces adapted to be manually grasped, inner surfaces defining an elongate cavity having a fluid passageway portion. The pneumoneedle includes a non-removable cannula having a proximal end sealingly and fixedly attached to the housing, and a sharpened distal end adapted to pierce tissue. A protector assembly is present which has a closed blunt distal end, a first abutment end surface, and a camming surface.

  • Patent number: 5364367
Abstract: An anchor sheet and anchor body for holding a cannula within the abdominal cavity of a patient is described. The cannula is used during a laparoscopic surgical procedure. The anchor sheet and anchor body assist in holding the cannula in a preferred orientation relative to the abdominal cavity. An attachment mechanism such as a hook and loop fastener may be utilized to connect the anchor sheet to the anchor body.

  • Patent number: 5324306
Abstract: A puncture seal device for stemming the flow of blood from a punctured blood vessel includes an elongated outer sheath affixed to a generally tubular housing where the housing contains a manually actuable slide which is affixed to a rigid tubular pusher member coaxially disposed within the outer sheath. Also contained within the outer sheath in longitudinal alignment with the pusher and distally thereof is a ring-shaped plug of a hemostatic material. The assembly thus far described may be fitted over a tubular introducer or the body of a catheter and then advanced therealong until the distal end of the outer sheath is proximate a bleeding blood vessel. By actuating the pusher member, the hemostatic plug surrounding the introducer or catheter is ejected from the distal end of the outer sheath and held in abutting relationship to the bleeding blood vessel.

  • Patent number: 4863088
Abstract: A stapling instrument including two elongate structural members each comprising a handle part with a jaw part projecting from a first end. The structural members have pivot means at second ends of their handle parts adapted for free engagement and disengagement and relative pivotal movement of the structural members between open and closed positions. An elongate locking member is mounted one one of the structural members for pivotal movement to a locking position generally aligned with its handle part where the locking member can be releasably retained to forcefully move the structural members to their closed position so that high compressive forces can be applied to tissues between the jaw parts. Staples from a cartridge along one jaw part can then be driven through the tissue and closed against an anvil along the other jaw part.
