  • Patent number: 4905862
Abstract: A lightweight metal protective closure for covering the threaded dispensing openings in steel shipping drums during the drum exterior painting process. The closure is formed as a shallow cup having a bottom wall surrounded by an upstanding sidewall. The sidewall is formed with a single embossed thread and terminates in a circumferentially extending radially fluted lip. The lip is contoured to closely overlie and protect the exposed top surfaces of the upstanding opening neck from deleterious paint coverage leaving the lower neck surfaces exposed.

  • Patent number: 4003488
Abstract: A tear open bottle cap formed of lightweight sheet metal having a circular top panel surrounded by a cylindrical skirt connected thereto by a radiused juncture portion. An integrally formed pull member extends away from the skirt edge with a score line commencing at either side of the pull member extending upwardly across the cap skirt. The score lines diverge outwardly away from each other within the radiused juncture portion and continue part way about the periphery of the cap top panel in a circular path. The terminal portions of the score lines extend outwardly into the cap skirt at spaced positions opposite the pull member. An annular sealing gasket is disposed within said cap top so as to lie just radially inwardly of the circular scoring.

  • Patent number: 3974931
Abstract: A tear-off convenience bottle cap formed of lightweight sheet metal having a circular top panel surrounded by a cylindrical skirt. An annular sealing gasket disposed within said cap at the juncture of the top and skirt. An integrally formed pull member extends away from the skirt edge with a score line commencing at either side of the pull member extending upwardly across the cap skirt. The score lines continue part way about the periphery of the cap top panel protected against exposure to the bottle contents by the annular sealing gasket and are then directed radially outwardly into the cap skirt opposite the pull member, thus minimizing the pull force required to dislodge the cap from the underlying bottle finish at the termination of the tearing action.
