A durable antimicrobial coating is formed. The coated implants can be packaged using mechanized implant handling equipment without significant loss of the antimicrobial coating.

A durable antimicrobial coating is formed. The coated implants can be packaged using mechanized implant handling equipment without significant loss of the antimicrobial coating. In a preferred embodiment a controlled-release implant for administering an anabolic agent is coated with a durable nonvulcanizing silicone fluid plus oxytetracycline hydrochloride coating which does not interfere with diffusion of the anabolic agent from the implant.
