Abstract: Use of a liquid composition comprising at least two agents selected from lactic acid, salicylic acid, benzyl alcohol, and/or low molecular weight aliphatic alcohol having less than five carbon atoms for the manufacture of an antimicrobial solution is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, the antimicrobial solution is formulated as a teat dip for lactating animals, particularly cows. The composition may be used as a prophylactic treatment or for wound healing, and is particularly useful against mastitis. The antimicrobial compositions may be used in personal care, hard surface care including hard surface disinfection in households, food processing, hospitals, restaurants, hotels, showers, or topically as hand soaps, surgical scrubs, and hoof disease mitigators.

Abstract: Improved film-forming skin protectant compositions are provided which are capable of forming a long-lasting elastic barrier film when applied to skin; the compositions have particular utility as barrier teat dips, for protecting cows against mastitis, especially during their susceptible non-lactating periods. The compositions include a film-forming component (preferably a mixture of polyether polyurethane and nitrocellulose) dispersed in a compatible carrier and further having a quantity of a tackifier resin incorporated therein in order to increase the time of adherence of the composition to skin, as compared with an otherwise identical composition without a tackifier resin. The compositions may also include a germicide (e.g., chlorhexidine diacetate), and a coloring dye.

Abstract: New aqueous concentrates adapted for dilution to form use compositions, and methods of preventing or treating hoof diseases with these use compositions are provided. The compositions and concentrates comprise (and preferably consist essentially of) a quaternary ammonium compound, an acid, and a surfactant. Preferred quaternary ammonium compounds include those selected from the group consisting of alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium salts, alkyl dimethyl ethyl benzyl ammonium salts, dialkyl dimethyl ammonium salts, dialkyl methyl benzyl ammonium salts, and mixtures thereof. The inventive methods comprise diluting the concentrate to form a use composition and applying the use compositions to the affected areas by spraying, under a bandage, or in a footbath. The invention is particularly well-suited for treating papillomatous digital dermatitis.
