    Abstract: A method of removing a core from a CMC component in which the core was used to form an internal cavity. According to one embodiment of the invention, the core is removed from a fully densified CMC component by heating the component and core to a temperature at which the core deteriorates but below a temperature at which the component would melt or otherwise be damaged. According to a second embodiment of this invention, the component is only partially densified, and then impregnated with a coating material that is resistant to a leaching compound capable of removing the core. The core can then be removed using the leaching compound without damage to the internal surfaces of the component defined by the core when the component was fabricated.

    Abstract: A gripping system for use in uniaxial testing of test specimens at elevated temperatures, typically above 900.degree.-1000.degree. F. The uniaxial mechanical testing is typically tensile testing conducted on high temperature engineering materials which operate under severe conditions at elevated temperatures. The gripping system includes a gripping element having a first section adapted to contact the test specimen wherein a heater is received in the second section for heating the gripping surface. The heater is designed to heat the gripping surface and the test specimen to the desired temperature.

    Abstract: A hot compression process for forming integral edge seals in anode and cade assemblies wherein the assemblies are made to a nominal size larger than a finished size, beads of AFLAS are applied to a band adjacent the peripheral margins on both sides of the assemblies, the assemblies are placed in a hot press and compressed for about five minutes with a force sufficient to permeate the peripheral margins with the AFLAS, cooled and cut to finished size.

    Abstract: A phosphoric acid fuel cell having integral edge seals formed by an elastomer permeating an outer peripheral band contiguous with the outer peripheral edges of the cathode and anode assemblies and the matrix to form an integral edge seal which is reliable, easy to manufacture and has creep characteristics similar to the anode, cathode and matrix assemblies inboard of the seals to assure good electrical contact throughout the life of the fuel cell.
