  • Patent number: 6568172
Abstract: A thrust reverser includes axially adjoining forward and aft cowls defining a fan nacelle for surrounding a fan and core engine with a fan duct therebetween. The aft cowl has a forward face and the forward cowl has an aft face adjoining each other to define a reverser nozzle which converges radially outwardly. The aft cowl is translatable between a stowed position in which the reverser nozzle is closed and a deployed position in which the reverser nozzle is open for discharging fan air in a forward direction for thrust reversal.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: May 27, 2003
    Assignee: The Nordam Group, Inc.

  • Patent number: 6260801
Abstract: A hinge arm for a thrust reverser door may be mounted to an exhaust nozzle using an aft mount. The mount includes a frame for attachment to the nozzle. A swing link has a first pin pivotally joined to the frame, and a second pin for pivotally joining the hinge arm to the link to permit both swinging and pivoting of the hinge arm from the frame. The aft mount thusly permits the reverser doors to be reliably stowed around the nozzle.

  • Patent number: 5794433
Abstract: An improved target-type thrust reverser for use with an aircraft jet engine. Jet engines typically are housed in a nacelle and the engine terminates with an exhaust nozzle. The thrust reverser includes an upper door having a shape of a segment of a hollow frusto-conical member with an inner and outer surface, opposed longitudinal edges that taper towards each other, a forward semi-circular edge and a rearward semi-circular edge. The lower door is substantially identical. A pair of linkage arms pivotally support each of the upper and lower doors so that the doors are translatable between stowed and actuated positions. When in the stowed positions, the exterior surface of the doors form a part of the exterior surface of the engine nacelle. When in the actuated position, the doors are positioned rearwardly of the engine exhaust nozzle with their rearward edges in abutment.

  • Patent number: 5722233
Abstract: A modified exhaust tailpipe especially for use with an aircraft turbofan engine utilizing a noise suppressor. The modified tailpipe is connected to the exhaust duct of the engine. The forward end of the tailpipe is essentially the same diameter as that of the exhaust duct of the engine. The contour of the tailpipe is such that it increases in diameter to form a bulge to increase the flow area for fan gases in the area of a mixer which is supported within the forward end of the tailpipe exhaust system. This improves the operating efficiency of the jet engine.

  • Patent number: 5440875
Abstract: An internal flow mixer is attached to the rearward end of a turbofan engine for inverting the engine fan and core streams. Rearwardly of the internal flow mixer is a multi-lobed exhaust nozzle which mixes ambient air with the gases flowing from the flow mixer. An ejector housing lined with acoustic absorption material receives the flow from the exhaust nozzle and discharges the thrust producing gases in noise abatement condition.
