  • Patent number: 6659523
Abstract: A transfer apparatus for automated parts movement includes a cylinder and a piston assembly slidably positioned within the cylinder. The piston assembly includes an outer piston having a recess in which an inner piston is slidably received. A transfer assembly is attached to the piston assembly and includes an inner rod, a sheath, and a gripper. Introduction of fluid at one port or end of the cylinder moves the piston assembly to extend the gripper and transport a gripped part to a target destination. At the target destination, the transfer assembly is moved via pressurized fluid in the cylinder to cause the gripper to release the gripped part. Introduction of fluid generally at an opposite end of the cylinder moves the transfer assembly and gripper to a retracted position relative to the cylinder.

  • Patent number: 6367856
Abstract: A transfer apparatus for automated parts movement comprises a cylinder attached to a rearward and a forward end cap. Slidably positioned within the cylinder is an outer piston having a recess in which an inner piston is slidably received. A transfer assembly is attached to the inner and outer piston. The transfer assembly includes an inner rod attached to a gripper and a sheath. The inner rod is attached to the inner piston and extends through both the outer piston and the forward end cap. The sheath is affixed to the outer piston and encases the inner rod and gripper. Introduction of fluid through the rearward end cap moves the pistons to extend and expose the gripper, enabling it to grasp an article, and thereafter transports the article to the target destination. At the target destination, continued movement of the outer piston towards the forward end cap extends the sheath to move over the gripper, and thereby removes and deposits the article.

  • Publication number: 20010054333
Abstract: An automatic fastener feed system provides a nut, bolt or other fastener to a movable drive tool such that the fastener is automatically engaged with a drive member on the drive tool and subsequently driven onto a corresponding fastener on a work piece. The feed system includes a fastener acceptor which is adapted for connection to a parts feeder via a supply line. The parts feeder provides the fasteners to the fastener acceptor, which at least temporarily retains the fastener in a position for engagement with the drive member. As the drive member rotates and moves through the fastener acceptor toward a mating fastener on a work piece, the fastener within the fastener acceptor is automatically aligned and engaged with the mating fastener as the drive member is rotatably driven by the drive tool. Continued operation of the drive member causes the fastener acceptor to release the fastener, thereby allowing the fastener to be driven completely onto the mating fastener on the work piece.
