  • Patent number: 6419005
Abstract: A mold cassette and method for continuously casting thin slabs. The cassette comprises a trough including a pair of vertically disposed, opposed broad walls and a pair of opposed narrow walls. The trough has an entry end for receiving molten material and an exit end for dispensing the material. The narrow walls are generally wider at the entry end than the exit end and are adapted for sealing engagement with the broad walls so as to prevent leakage of the material therebetween. At least one of the narrow walls is oriented at a selected tilt and adjustable at the tilt for changing the width of the slab during casting. Back edges of at least one of the adjustable narrow walls are relieved a region corresponding generally to the transition zone of the trough. This allows positioning of the narrow wall in a generally less than vertical plane during casting while maintaining the broad and narrow walls in sealing engagement with one another.

  • Patent number: 5490555
Abstract: In a continuous casting system, there is provided an apparatus and a method for controlling the forces exerted by the foot rollers on the continuous casting slab. In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, the apparatus includes a hinged foot roller assembly and a hydraulic cylinder for moving the assembly toward and away from the slab. A linear variable differential transformer signals the cylinder to move the assembly relative to the slab such contact between the foot rollers and the slab edge is maintained at a selected contact force.

  • Patent number: 5297612
Abstract: An improved method for controlling the clamping forces exerted on opposing sidewalls of a casting mold during a continuous casting operation, which comprises the steps of presetting the mold for the maximum load to be experienced by the sidewalls of the mold, securing the mold at the presetting, and, through displacement measuring devices and hydraulic spring mechanisms, controlling the forces exerted upon the sidewalls during the continuous casting operation as a function of the thermodynamic stresses to which the mold is subjected.

  • Patent number: 4103903
Abstract: A fluid actuated sealing arrangement is provided for use in conjunction with a rotatable member. The arrangement utilizes an actuating fluid for both biasing a rotatable sealing element of the sealing arrangement into sealing association with a portion of the rotatable member and for providing the necessary lubrication to the rotatable sealing element. The sealing arrangement is configured to provide a loading force to the sealing element which is substantially parallel to the axis of rotation of the rotatable member. In a preferred embodiment of the arrangement, the sealing element is adapted to seal a surface substantially normal thereto which is formed as an extension of the rotatable element being sealed.
