Patent number: 8640161Abstract: A system includes a cache, coupled to a receiver, to store received content and advertisements. An interface in the receiver detects the occurrence of an advantageous condition during the play of content retrieved from the cache. The receiver locates one or more advertisements in the cache, and enables the display of a user interface in place of the content so long as the advantageous condition is detected. The user interface includes selectable indicia of the located advertisements and an indicia of the content. The interface is adapted to locate one or more advertisements using markers that are inserted into the content by the interface, and pointers to the one or more advertisements associated with the markers, the pointers having a stored association to the markers.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 2009Date of Patent: January 28, 2014Assignee: BlackArrowInventors: Oleg B. Rashkovskiy, Thomas J. Morgan, Matthew Wong, Brian T. Duersch

Patent number: 8578405Abstract: A system includes a receiver to receive content and an advertisement. The system further includes a cache, coupled to the receiver, to store the content and the advertisement. An interface in the receiver receives an updated advertisement and updating instructions, the updating instructions to enable the receiver to replace the stored advertisement with the updated advertisement. The receiver detects a starting point of the advertisement and creates a marker and inserts it into the content to indicate said starting point, and stores the advertisement from the content to a memory storage location separate from the content, and creates and stores a pointer to the memory location. The interface detects a user-initiated pause in the viewing of content, retrieves the updated advertisement from storage, and provides a user interface that enables the user to view the retrieved advertisement for as long as the viewing of the content remains paused.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 2009Date of Patent: November 5, 2013Assignee: Blackarrow, Inc.Inventors: Oleg B. Rashkovskiy, Thomas J. Morgan, Matthew Wong, Brian T. Duersch

Publication number: 20090304357Abstract: Content which users may wish to receive may be distributed with interrupting content such that the use of the content on the user's receiver may be interrupted and replaced with the interrupting content. The content which the user wishes to receive may be software, audio, video, graphics or other material and the interrupting content in one embodiment of the prevent invention may be advertisements. In this way, the user's receiver may be utilized to determine when it is appropriate to interrupt the interruptible content with the interrupting content. This may provide a convenient mechanism for reduced price or free distribution of a wide variety of media currently provided only in physical form or only for free without any compensation to the content provider.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 17, 2009Publication date: December 10, 2009Inventors: Oleg B. Rashkovskiy, Thomas J. Morgan, Matthew Wong, Brian T. Duersch

Publication number: 20090171784Abstract: A dynamic advertising insertion system automatically inserts advertisements in response to opportunities that arise in the course of content playback. For example, when a user hits a pause button, an advertising opportunity may be created and an appropriate advertisement may be inserted. One basis for determining which advertisement to insert is to enforce a predetermined agreement between a content provider and one or more distributors that sets forth a percentage of advertising opportunities that each entity will be afforded. Thus, the decision of what advertisement to insert may be based on a number of factors, including the type of content, the particular user's equipment, information about the user, and the need to adjust the playback of advertisements to enforce the percentage split between the advertising entities.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 27, 2007Publication date: July 2, 2009Inventors: Thomas J. Morgan, Christopher A. White, Matthew Wong, Leslie M. Carter, Mason T. Jones

Patent number: 7027666Abstract: A method for determining skew angle (5) and location of a document in an over-scanned digital image is disclosed. A document is scanned to capture a gray scale image. The outline pixel (1) of a document from the captured gray scale image are connected (2). An initial angle is set at zero and a x-minimum, y-minimum, x-maximum, and y-maximum of the polygon are determined (3). A rectangular boundary (4) area based on the x-minimum, y-minimum, x-maximum, and y-maximum is calculated and recorded. The angle is recorded and the polygon is rotated z-degree. The process is repeated and a minimum boundary area is selected. An angle corresponding to the minimum boundary is the skew angle of the document.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 2002Date of Patent: April 11, 2006Assignee: Eastman Kodak CompanyInventors: Peter Rudak, Yongchun Lee, Thomas J. Patent number: 4475853Abstract: Drill structure including an improved drill with indexable inserts, the drill including a straight fluted end with increased chip clearance and decreased clearance between the outer periphery of the end and the bore surface for reduced chip binding. The drill includes a grooved barrel which is received in a bushing fixed with respect to the workpiece to prevent wobble and to precisely locate the bore.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1982Date of Patent: October 9, 1984Assignee: Deere & CompanyInventor: Thomas J. Patent number: 4184945Abstract: An air flow system for use in a wall-mount microwave oven is disclosed. A housing of the microwave oven has an interior which is divided into a cooking cavity and an electronic component compartment. A front face of the housing is comprised of a movable door and a control panel. A circuit board for holding electronic components is mounted within the electronic component compartment so that it is spaced from the control panel. An air passageway is defined in the area between the control panel and the circuit board. An air inlet is disposed adjacent an upper end of the control panel for admitting air into the electrical component compartment and an air outlet is disposed adjacent a lower end of the control panel for allowing air to exit from the electrical component compartment. A blower draws air in through the air inlet, and forces the air through the electrical component compartment, and out the air outlet. A mechanism diverts a portion of the air being drawn in through the inlet to the air passageway.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 1978Date of Patent: January 22, 1980Assignee: Litton Systems, Inc.Inventors: Thomas J.
