  • Patent number: 5708740
Abstract: An optical notch filter is created in a bared length of single mode fibre by using a microburner and longitudinal stretching of the fibre to form a set of equispaced sharply localized non-adiabatic biconical tapers at a pitch corresponding to the beat length between the core-guided HE.sub.11 mode and the cladding-guided HE.sub.12 mode, the latter being stripped downstream of the tapers by a plastics protective coating surrounding the fibre.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: January 13, 1998
    Assignee: Northern Telecom Limited
    Inventor: Thomas John Cullen
  • Patent number: 5703976
Abstract: A wavelength selective 2.times.2 single mode fibre coupler has a weakly coupled coupling region n which the cladding modes of the two fibres are coupled while the core modes remain uncoupled. A matched pair of core/cladding mode converters are located, one on one fibre on one side of the coupling region, and the other on the other fibre on the other side.
