Publication number: 20130331116Abstract: Act initiation details can be automatically selected based on time information in a time-based object in a mobile device. In response to a gesture made with the mobile device and sensing a proximity of the mobile device to a receiving device, the selected act initiation details can be transmitted to the receiving device. The act initiation details may be call initiation details that can be received from the mobile device at the receiving device. The receiving device can use the call initiation details to place a telephone call represented by the call initiation details without using the mobile device as a telephone for the call.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 6, 2012Publication date: December 12, 2013Applicant: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Thomas Kuehnel, Amer Hassan

Publication number: 20130182625Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for offloading control of services in a mobile device to a non-cellular wireless network, such as Wi-Fi. The described system and method allow the overall connection management to be performed by an application processor, while services are handled in a modem using Wi-Fi connectivity. The Wi-Fi subsystem can be fully driven by the modem for time critical operations allowing the application processor to be off (or in low-power mode) when it is not involved in the delivery of services. Battery power is saved by being able to substantially power down the application processor.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 9, 2012Publication date: July 18, 2013Applicant: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Thomas Kuehnel, Gregory Scott, John D. Publication number: 20130065584Abstract: Techniques and tools are described for transmitting beacon messages using a wireless communication protocol, such as the Bluetooth Low Energy protocol. In some examples, beacon messages can be generated in a compact format and included in an AdvData portion of a payload of a protocol data unit of a Bluetooth Low Energy advertising channel packet. A beacon message can be transmitted from a stationary beacon generation device and broadcast to an area within a transmission range of the beacon generation device, and mobile computing devices, such as mobile phones, can receive the beacon message and perform one or more actions in response to information contained in the beacon message, all while conserving energy used by the beacon generation device and the mobile computing device.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 12, 2011Publication date: March 14, 2013Applicant: Microsoft CorporationInventors: James M. Patent number: 8396041Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for adapting a communication system to varying conditions. Using some form of discovery protocol, the communication standards supported by at least two communicants are determined. Each communicant may then periodically monitor the quality of the channel established by the communication standard and dynamically select a set of one or more communication standards to use for communicating. Further, when communicants share common non-standard parameterized implementations of communication standards, changes to the protocols which the communication standards comprise can be used to add options for a more dynamic response to changing conditions than is possible when adhering only to an established communication standard.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 2005Date of Patent: March 12, 2013Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Amer A. Patent number: 8151280Abstract: The present invention relates to a system and method for configuring and managing network devices. The arrival (and departure) of devices on a network can be detected by a monitor. Upon detection, network devices can be simply and dynamically configured with little or no end-user intervention, for instance by automatically loading device drivers and allocating resources for the devices. Furthermore, network devices can be associated with other network devices such as a personal computer to facilitate seamless integration of network devices with a computer operating system.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 2004Date of Patent: April 3, 2012Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Dale A. Publication number: 20120072727Abstract: A mechanism that allows sharing of an existing infrastructure for access to public or private IP networks, such as the public Internet or private LANs is provided. Specifically, infrastructure owners lease the infrastructure resources on a short-term basis to different Internet Service Providers (ISPs). An ISP uses these resources to provide Internet services to subscribing customers or users. The ISP controls all aspects of the Internet service provided to the subscriber, including billing, bandwidth management, and e-mail. The ISP also ensures privacy for the subscriber by means of encryption. Leasing network resources from an existing network infrastructure frees the ISP from building an expensive access infrastructure itself while the infrastructure owner is given an opportunity to generate additional revenue from infrastructure. Importantly, neither the user, nor the ISP need to trust the access station (i.e.: the access station is untrusted) through which the access to the IP network is accomplished.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 28, 2011Publication date: March 22, 2012Applicant: NEC CORPORATIONInventors: Jens-Peter Redlich, Thomas Kuehnel, Wolf Mueller

Patent number: 7376235Abstract: Disclosed are methods and systems for frustrating statistical attacks. A sender and receiver agree upon an encryption and integrity encoding scheme. For each “real” data packet, the sender generates integrity information, puts it in the packet, and then encrypts the packet using the agreed-upon scheme. Every now and again, the sender generates a “pseudo-data” packet encoded using a scheme different from the agreed-upon scheme. When the real-data and pseudo-data packets arrive at the receiver, they are decrypted using the agreed-upon scheme, and their validity is verified using the integrity information. Verification succeeds for real-data packets, and their data are accepted as valid. Verification fails for pseudo-data packets, however, and their data are discarded. An eavesdropper cannot differentiate pseudo-data from real-data and so cannot help but use all of the packets in its analysis.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 2002Date of Patent: May 20, 2008Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventor: Thomas Kuehnel

Publication number: 20080005562Abstract: Establishing a chain of trust in a public key infrastructure can be costly, time consuming and requires nearly constant access to the appropriate network-based authorities. Local trust between devices is established using a combination of a personal identification number (PIN) delivered out-of-band and self-signed certificates. The client may present the PIN to an electronic device such as a projector or printer so the electronic device can trust the client. The electronic device may present a self-signed digital certificate with the electronic device UUID based on a hash of the electronic device public key from the certificate.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 13, 2005Publication date: January 3, 2008Applicant: MICROSOFT CORPORATIONInventors: Dale Sather, Guillaume Simonnet, Shannon Chan, Thomas Kuehnel, William Williams

Publication number: 20070255840Abstract: An electronic device may present a user interface for making selections related to connecting to a network or selecting a network from a plurality of available networks. Additionally, a user interface may give a user an opportunity to secure to an open, unsecure, connection, for example, an ad-hoc wireless connection, such as may be found at a coffee shop. A selection of security offerings may be made from a user interface screen including pre-populated service providers. A user may be allowed to save preferences for connecting to new networks, as well as preferences related to previously used networks. Further, the user may save preferences for invoking security services on a per-network or pan-network basis. The security service may a known tunneling protocol (i.e. VPN), such as L2TP or PPTP.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 28, 2006Publication date: November 1, 2007Applicant: MICROSOFT CORPORATIONInventors: David Jones, Thomas Kuehnel
