  • Patent number: 4465226
Abstract: A paperboard tray blank has minimum height h in relation to the diameter D of the cans in the tray such that this diameter is equal to or greater than three times said height. The tray is formed from the blank by gluing corner tabs to the side walls or flaps, and the glue joint is compressed in a unique compression unit. The corner tabs have a length greater than the height h of the side and end walls so that the corners of the tray are provided with a tapered configuration which results in the ends of these corner tabs being engageable with the cans within the tray. The compression unit yieldably engages the outside of the tray to set the glue.

  • Patent number: 4426034
Abstract: Three packing cases are disclosed each having a tray and a top portion so assembled that abutting marginal edges of the side and end panels of the tray and cover are adapted to support one case stacked upon another without relying upon the columnar strength of the contents of the case, and where the tray and cover individually have a vertical height significantly less than the height of the product contained in the case. The tray and cover are fabricated from a multiple ply corrugated cardboard material and conventionally formed from generally flat rectangulr blanks with uniquely arranged end flaps such that the flaps can be glued to the tray and nevertheless easily disassembled for purposes of displaying the contents of the tray after the cover has been removed.

  • Patent number: 4026237
Abstract: Apparatus for applying glue to a surface of an object moving relatively to the glue applying apparatus is provided by a valve housing having a valve bore therein, the bore having a glue outlet orifice and a glue inlet, the valve housing being adapted to be disposed such that the orifice is adjacent the surface of the object upon which glue is to be applied; valve means are disposed within the valve bore for opening and closing the glue outlet orifice; and a slot is disposed in the outer surface of the valve housing in fluid communication with the orifice and oriented such that the longitudinal dimension of the slot lies substantially parallel to the direction of travel of the surface upon which glue is to be applied, the slot having a cross-sectional area which is smaller than the cross-sectional area of the glue outlet orifice, the length of the slot being sufficient to hold an amount of glue remaining in said slot after the valve means has closed the orifice until the relatively moving surface draws the glu

  • Patent number: 3981123
Abstract: Erected cartons are fed downstream on a dead plate by the various flight bars of a flight bar conveyor system, and between upper and lower pairs of side guides which are adjustable both laterally to accommodate cartons of various widths. Plows associated with the side guides preposition the closure flaps of the cartons so that each of these flaps is received in a slot of an adhesive applying head so that bands or strips of adhesive are applied to these flaps. The adhesive applying heads are uniquely mounted in that they are conveniently prepositioned for accommodating the flaps when the side guides are adjusted to the width of the carton. Two such heads are pivotally mounted in a block provided on the longitudinal center line of the machine, with a link being provided between each adhesive applying head and the side guide structure.
