    Abstract: A system for continuously monitoring the chemistry of a liquid medium within a container includes assaying instrumentation located exteriorly of the container, a conduit connected to the assaying instrumentation and leading to the container, a probe connected to the conduit and penetrating a wall of the container. The probe includes a microporous filtering element for separating a filtrate from the culture medium, the filtering element having a surface roughness less than about 50 microinches.
