  • Patent number: 6283756
Abstract: A combat maneuver training system includes a shooter platform (1) and a target platform (2). A first step is performed at the shooter platform, and operates a rangefinder (18) to determine a laser range of a shooter platform weapon (1A). At the target platform, the operation of the rangefinder is detected, and a controller (10) of the target platform transmits a current location (e.g. from GPS) of the target platform. At the shooter platform, when the target platform is in range, the controller (10) calculates an impact point of a simulated ordinance on the target platform and an impact time, and then transmits this and other information to the target platform. Meanwhile, an operator of the target platform, detecting the rangefinding operation, begins to maneuver the target platform to evade the simulated ordinance.

  • Patent number: 5708747
Abstract: A fiber-based delivery system and method for delivering pulsed high power optical radiation (14) over longer fiber lengths than prior fiber-based systems comprises a fiber bundle (10) and a beam launcher (12) that directs a high power optical beam (14) to an input end (18) of the fiber bundle (10), and distributes it over the individual fibers (22) in the bundle. The number of fibers (22) is large enough so that substantially all of the individual fibers (22) are subjected to an optical intensity level below that required to induce substantial nonlinear optical losses. In addition, the diameters of the individual fiber cores (34) are small enough so that the modal dispersion experienced by the optical beam (14) does not exceed approximately 80 ns/km. In a preferred embodiment for transmission of pulsed 1.06 micron light, the fiber bundle (10) comprises 96 individual fibers (22), with respective core (34) diameters of approximately 600 microns, that are encapsulated in a jacketed adhesive (30).

  • Patent number: 5141308
Abstract: A semiconductor laser pulse compression radar system utilizes a semiconductor laser source 16 for generating light for transmission towards a target 27. A modulator 15 pulses and modulates the light according to a preselected code, and a transmitter telescope 18 launches the light. Portions of the pulsed light reflected by the target 27 are gathered by a receiver telescope 28 and are converted to electrical current pulses by an avalanche photodiode 30. The pulses of electrical current are demodulated by demodulator 31, which includes a pulse compression filter 35 which has the conjugate time-frequency characteristic of the modulator. A display/counter 36 displays the range of the target from the system.
