  • Patent number: 6547883
Abstract: An apparatus for applying a liquid composition to one or more fibers of a fan of fibers provides a housing defining an elongated passageway therethrough such that the fan of fibers travels along a path through the passageway. The apparatus further provides a plurality of centrifugal spray heads including at least a first centrifugal spray head mounted in the housing and supplied with the liquid composition under pressure for directing the liquid composition onto one or more fibers of the fan of fibers passing a first location of the path. The plurality of centrifugal spray heads further includes at least a second centrifugal spray head mounted in the housing and being supplied with the liquid composition under pressure to direct the liquid composition onto one or more fibers of the fan of fibers passing a second location of the path.

  • Patent number: 5961685
Abstract: A sizing applicator is provided for applying a coating of sizing composition to glass fibers. The sizing applicator includes a housing and a roll applicator which is rotatably coupled to the housing. The housing has a supply port adapted to receive sizing composition from a sizing supply source, an exit slot and a passageway extending from the supply port to the exit slot. The passageway receives sizing composition from the supply port and delivers the sizing composition to the exit slot such that the sizing composition exits the housing and is received on an outer surface of the roll applicator. The roll applicator is spaced from the housing such that the housing does not substantially contact the sizing composition once it is received on the roll applicator.

  • Patent number: 5954853
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for producing uniformly sized glass fibers. A heated bushing supplies streams of molten glass to be drawn into continuous fibers, and a drawing device attenuates the streams into fibers. A sizing applicator has a coating element engaging the drawn fibers, which applies a coating of sizing composition to the fibers. A shoe spaced from the applicator engages the fibers and causes the fibers to sweep back and forth across the element.

  • Patent number: 5843202
Abstract: Energy efficient apparatus for forming migration free glass fiber packages composed of fibers bearing substantially uniform coatings of size composition. Heated air from around the fiber forming bushing is drawn into a chamber through which the glass fibers pass to cause the water or solvent in the applied size to be evaporated. The flow of heated air through the chamber is regulated so as to obtain substantially uniform size application to the fibers.

  • Patent number: 4349365
Abstract: Dual strand packaging apparatus including an indexible turret having two winding collets rotatably mounted thereon, an elongated bushing above the collets with a longer dimension extending transversely of the collets, the bushing supplying molten glass streams for attenuation into glass filaments, gathering shoes disposed in a manner enabling filaments at the bushing to be divided equally into front and rear groups and the groups gathered respectively into front and rear strands for winding into front and rear packages on front and rear winding sleeves on a collet in operating position, a strand push-off blade advanceable and retractable along a collet in the operating position and constructed to trap the front and rear strands while in advanced position upon indexing of the turret and while retracting to pull both strands to the rear of a collet moved to operating position upon indexing of the turret, and a strand release blade for moving the front and rear strands out of the push-off blade as the push-off b

  • Patent number: 4300728
Abstract: Apparatus adapted for the continuous collection of strands is provided wherein, a strand control assembly comprised of a plurality of plates having specific edged configurations is adapted to move a plurality of strands from their associated package collection regions to a temporary collection region and return the strands to the appropriate package collection regions automatically while the strands are continuously wound.
