Patent number: 8477097Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention are directed to a method and system for controlling a display device. In one embodiment, a start position is registered which defines the first position and orientation of a remote controller relative to the position of the display device. When movement of the remote controller is detected, a second position and orientation of the remote controller is determined. A point on the display device is determined where a mathematical line extending from the front edge of the remote controller along its longitudinal axis intersects the front plane of the display device. Finally, a message is sent for causing a cursor displayed on the display device to be moved to the point where the mathematical line intersects the front plane of the display device.Type: GrantFiled: February 21, 2006Date of Patent: July 2, 2013Assignees: Sony Corporation, Sony Electronics Inc.Inventors: Thomas P. Patent number: 8346946Abstract: Manufacturer registration of consumer electronic devices includes a registration server receiving purchaser-specific information from a user computer over a network, such as the Internet. This received purchaser-specific information may then be associated with a temporary short code, which is in turn provided back to the user computer over the network. The purchaser is then free to input the provided temporary short code into the consumer electronic device to be registered, after which both the short code and certain additional device-specific identification information may be provided directly by the consumer electronic device to the registration server over a network connection. The provided short code may then be matched to the previously-provided purchaser-specific information, and the manufacturer registration process completed using both the purchaser-specific information and the device-specific identification information.Type: GrantFiled: November 24, 2009Date of Patent: January 1, 2013Assignees: Sony Corporation, Sony Electronics Inc.Inventor: Thomas P. Patent number: 8339514Abstract: Rather than have a unique code set per TV product, a common code base is provided to service multiple products and even multiple product lines. Embedded systems can be upgraded through a network connection. The software architecture provides a flexible approach to supporting multiple product offerings through a plug-in modular middle-ware and to providing standardized hardware acceleration for both 2D and 3D graphics. The plug-in capability provides for feature additions and upgrades after sale.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 2008Date of Patent: December 25, 2012Assignees: Sony Corporation, Sony Electronics Inc.Inventors: Thomas P. Dawson, Aixin Liu, Kai Liu, Andy Nguyen, Ling Jun Wong

Patent number: 7542805Abstract: A non-invasive system and process for converting sensory data, e.g., visual, audio, taste, smell or touch, to neural firing timing differences in a human brain and using acoustic signals to generate the neural firing time differences. Data related to neural firing time differences, the acoustic signals, and a user's response map may be stored in memory. The user's response map may be used to more accurately map the calculated neural firing time differences to the correct neural locations.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 2005Date of Patent: June 2, 2009Assignees: Sony Corporation, Sony Electronics Inc.Inventor: Thomas P. Patent number: 7538778Abstract: A polygon rendering system for receiving geometric data defining a polygon in an image being generated. The polygon rendering system renders the geometric data as pixel data. The pixel data defines pixels used to display the image. The system comprises a first memory buffer for storing the pixel data. It also comprises a second memory buffer for storing additional pixel data used to render edge pixels at a higher resolution than pixels that are not the edge pixels. Edge pixels are pixels that are located on an edge of the polygon in the image. The system also comprises a display controller for outputting the pixel data in the first memory buffer to output circuitry. The polygon rendering system identifies which of the pixels are the edge pixels and the display controller updates contents of the first buffer with data based on contents of the second buffer.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 2005Date of Patent: May 26, 2009Assignees: Sony Corporation, Sony Electronics, Inc.Inventor: Thomas P. Patent number: 7382969Abstract: A method for preventing the copying of useable video content is disclosed. The method includes identifying the video signal content of a video signal that is suitable to be extracted, extracting video content from the video signal to transmit to a receiver, and replacing the extracted video content with marred video content in the video signal. The method further includes placing the extracted video content in a user data channel of a program stream for transmission to a receiver. In addition, the method includes transmitting portions of the video signal that contains the marred video content in a first channel of the program stream, and transmitting the extracted video content in a second channel of the program stream to the receiver. The signals transmitted in the program stream are synchronized for presentation in the display of the receiver.Type: GrantFiled: February 19, 2003Date of Patent: June 3, 2008Assignees: Sony Corporation, Sony Electronics Inc.Inventor: Thomas P. Publication number: 20080104267Abstract: A client-side device is able to request streaming media from a server over a network connection. In one embodiment, the client device sends streaming media requests to the server and, in response, a streaming media connection is established between the client-side device and the server in accordance with an appropriate networking protocol. Once this streaming media connection is established, the client-side device may make additional requests for other media streams. Delivery of such additional media streams may then proceed using the existing streaming media connection.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 1, 2006Publication date: May 1, 2008Applicants: SONY CORPORATION, SONY ELECTRONICS, INC.Inventor: Thomas P. Patent number: 7093274Abstract: A home video server system includes a source control library and a streaming library. A stream controller is connected between the source control library and the streaming library. Moreover, a plurality of network display terminals can be connected to the streaming library via a network connection. The source control library can choose between a plurality of media sources for streaming video content. When the sources for the streaming video content change, the connection between the network display terminal and the streaming library remains the same.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 2003Date of Patent: August 15, 2006Assignees: Sony Corporation, Sony Electronics Inc.Inventors: Thomas P. Patent number: 6729337Abstract: A non-invasive system and process for projecting sensory data onto the human neural cortex is provided. The system includes a primary transducer array and a secondary transducer array. The primary transducer array acts as a coherent signal source, and the secondary transducer array acts as a controllable diffraction pattern that focuses energy onto the neural cortex in a desired pattern. In addition, the pattern of energy is constructed such that each portion projected into the neural cortex may be individually pulsed at low frequency. This low frequency pulsing is formed by controlling the phase differences between the emitted energy of the elements of primary and secondary transducer arrays.Type: GrantFiled: January 28, 2003Date of Patent: May 4, 2004Assignees: Sony Corporation, Sony Electronics Inc.Inventor: Thomas P.
