  • Patent number: 5123818
Abstract: The orbiting scroll element of a scroll compressor is integral with the rotor of an internal stator rolling rotor motor. Anti-rotation means are provided to limit the rotor and orbiting scroll to orbiting motion.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 3, 1991
Date of Patent: June 23, 1992
    Assignee: Carrier Corporation
Inventors: Thomas P. Gormley, James F. Crofoot
  • Patent number: 5080562
Abstract: A rolling rotor motor/compressor is provided with an external rotor/piston which coacts with a bore/cylinder in the housing and one or more vanes to define a rolling piston compressor. Thus, the stator does not form a part of the compression chamber. The compressor can be readily designed for two cylinder or two stage operation.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 11, 1989
Date of Patent: January 14, 1992
    Assignee: Carrier Corporation
Inventors: Kenneth C. Barrows, Thomas P. Gormley, Raymond T. Divers
  • Patent number: 5002470
Abstract: The center of gravity of the rotor of a rolling rotor motor and the center of gravity of the orbiting scroll(s) of a scroll compressor are located on diametrically opposite sides of the centerline of the stator. The rotor and orbiting scroll(s) are connected through a plurality of circumferentially spaced links which are pivotable about fixed axes whereby movement of the rotor produces movement of the orbiting scroll(s) while the orbiting scroll(s) serves as a counterweight with respect to the rotor.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 14, 1989
Date of Patent: March 26, 1991
    Assignee: Carrier Corporation
Inventors: Thomas P. Gormley, James F. Crofoot
  • Patent number: 4984480
Abstract: The center of gravity of the rotor of a rolling rotor motor and the center of gravity of the counterweights are located on diametrically opposite sides of the centerline of the stator. The rotor and counterweights are connected through a plurality of circumferentially spaced links which are pivotable about fixed axes. The rotor and counterweights are able to move radially to change their rotation arm but such movement is transmitted to the other member through the links resulting in a corresponding movement.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 14, 1989
Date of Patent: January 15, 1991
    Assignee: Carrier Corporation
Inventors: Thomas P. Gormley, James F. Crofoot
  • Patent number: 4867652
Abstract: A rolling rotor motor/compressor is made with a stator and both an inner and an outer rotor which serve to mechanically balance the device. The device can be configured to be a single compressor, two compressors, staged compressors as well as functioning as a motor. In the preferred embodiment the rotors are restricted to an orbiting movement.
