Publication number: 20030207105Abstract: Films useful as tape backings, and more particularly biaxially oriented polypropylene film backings and tapes including such backings. A brittle, biaxially oriented polypropylene film is provided by minimizing the nucleation density in the extruded and quenched polypropylene polymer cast sheet followed by maximizing the spherulitic growth rate of the resultant quenched polymer. The cast sheet so formed is stretched at higher-than-normal temperatures in the subsequent orientation steps for producing the biaxially oriented polypropylene film. This produces a more brittle film.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 27, 2003Publication date: November 6, 2003Applicant: 3M Innovative Properties CompanyInventors: Joan M. Strobel, Thomas P. Hanschen

Publication number: 20020176975Abstract: The invention is a tamper indicating device including a backing. The backing includes a first phase and a second phase. The backing is normally light transmissive, but a peeling force causes the backing to internally delamninate and become opaque. A first skin layer is fixed to the backing wherein the skin layer minimizes pre-destruction of the backing. A layer of adhesive is applied to the first skin layer, which can be affixed to a substrate.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 13, 2002Publication date: November 28, 2002Applicant: 3M Innovative Properties CompanyInventors: Mark A. Wright, Raymond R. Rivera, Thomas P. Hanschen, Julian B. Cooley, Raymond R. Gosselin

Patent number: 6303067Abstract: A method of biaxially stretching a polymeric film according to an overbias or overstretch stretch profile to a final first direction stretch parameter and a final second direction stretch parameter to provide a film having uniform properties. First, a sufficiently high temperature is imparted to the film to allow a significant amount of biaxial stretch. The film is then biaxially tenter stretched to a peak first direction stretch parameter that is at least 1.3 times the final first direction stretch parameter wherein the final first direction stretch parameter is no larger than the final second direction stretch parameter. Finally, the film is retracted in the first direction from the peak first direction stretch parameter to the final first direction stretch parameter to produce a film having uniformity of properties in the first direction.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 1998Date of Patent: October 16, 2001Assignee: 3M Innovative Properties CompanyInventors: Chiu Ping Wong, Thomas P.
