  • Patent number: 4468455
Abstract: In a cell culture process, the addition of an additive is only carried out after it has been determined that the previous addition of additive has caused at least a minimum change in metabolic activity of the cells.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 2, 1980
Date of Patent: August 28, 1984
    Assignee: Phillips Petroleum Company
    Inventor: Thomas R. Hopkins
  • Patent number: 4450153
Abstract: The level of alcohol content (methanol or ethanol) in blood is reduced by contacting the blood alcohol with the enzyme alcohol oxidase. Injection, extracorporeal shunt (dialysis), and oral administration are contemplated as routes of administration. Suitable compositions for reducing the blood alcohol level are also provided.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 30, 1982
Date of Patent: May 22, 1984
    Assignee: Phillips Petroleum Company
    Inventor: Thomas R. Hopkins
  • Patent number: 4430427
Abstract: Combining active alcohol oxidase with sufficient amount of an azide compound has been found to form a red absorbing combination. Formation of the red absorbing combination enables determining the presence of active alcohol oxidase by adding the azide compound to a preparation and observing the resultant color. Additionally, alcohol oxidase may be purified by adding the azide compound to a preparation containing active alcohol oxidase in an amount effective to produce a red absorbing complex and separating the red absorbing complex from the preparation.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 4, 1980
Date of Patent: February 7, 1984
    Assignee: Phillips Petroleum Company
    Inventor: Thomas R. Hopkins
  • Patent number: 4419466
Abstract: Invert emulsion polymers are prepared by continuously circulating a system comprising a non-polar liquid and an aqueous solution of polymerizable monomers, continuously adding components to said system and continuously withdrawing a portion of said system comprising the desired invert emulsion polymer. The method is conveniently effected in a loop reactor. It is particularly effective for the production of invert emulsion polymers of acrylamidoalkanesulfonic acids and their salts; e.g., 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 25, 1981
Date of Patent: December 6, 1983
    Assignee: The Lubrizol Corporation
    Inventor: Thomas R. Hopkins
  • Patent number: 4342835
Abstract: Foam in a fermentation process is subjected to a centrifugal action causing a three layer separation. The three layers (gas, cell depleted liquid and cell rich liquid) are in contact with each other inside of the fermentation vessel.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 3, 1980
Date of Patent: August 3, 1982
    Assignee: Provesta Corporation
Inventors: Donald O. Hitzman, Thomas R. Hopkins
  • Patent number: 4341802
Abstract: Microorganisms with low nucleic acid content are produced by acid treating of the microorganism. One embodiment relates to the extraction of so treated microorganisms after their separation from the acid treating fluid, using a strong base for the extraction. Another embodiment relates to the neutralization of the acid treating fluid containing nucleic acids prior to the introduction of this fluid into the fermentation zone, the anion of the acid and the metal cation used in the neutralization step forming minerals desirable for the growth medium in the fermentation step.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 24, 1980
Date of Patent: July 27, 1982
    Assignee: Provesto Corporation
    Inventor: Thomas R. Hopkins
