  • Patent number: 4033200
Abstract: A multiple ratio power transmission mechanism for a vehicle driveline comprising synchronized torque transmitting gears located on a pair of countershafts in parallel disposition with respect to a torque input shaft for establishing torque flow paths of differing speed ratios with minimum axial dimensions, the torque flow path through the fourth forward driving speed ratio including an overrunning clutch, and an overdrive ratio gear system with a fifth speed ratio synchronizer clutch means for establishing a mechanical torque delivery path around the overrunning clutch during overdrive operation, the countershafts being geared to a differential ring gear through which driving torque is delivered to oppositely disposed axle shafts.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 24, 1975
Date of Patent: July 5, 1977
    Assignee: Ford Motor Company
    Inventor: Thomas R. Stockton
  • Patent number: 4028965
Abstract: A planetary gear transmission having a hydrokinetic torque converter, a compound planetary gear unit and a simple planetary gear unit, an output shaft for the planetary gear units disposed concentrically with respect to the converter, and five friction clutches and brakes for establishing three forward driving ratios and a reverse ratio, the high ratio being characterized by a solid mechanical drive, the two lower ratios being defined in part by the converter and the lowest ratio and the reverse ratio being characterized by a relatively high value in comparison to planetary three-speed ratio transmission mechanisms of known construction.

Date of Patent: June 14, 1977
    Assignee: Ford Motor Company
    Inventor: Thomas R. Stockton
  • Patent number: 3986413
Abstract: A four-speed planetary transmission mechanism for an automotive vehicle including two simple planetary gear units and a fluid coupling, the latter being used to transmit torque during operation in the two lowest ratios, the torque delivery path through the mechanism during direct-drive fourth speed ratio operation being a split torque drive and the torque delivery path during third speed ratio operation being fully mechanical.

  • Patent number: 3985044
Abstract: A manual transmission for an automotive vehicle driveline having four forward driving ratios with torque transmitting gear elements mounted on countershafts arranged in radial disposition and in parallel relationship with respect to a power input shaft, a power output shaft concentrically disposed in the power input shaft whereby the overall axial dimensions of the transmission mechanism are reduced and the gear loads are isolated to reduce deflection and to permit the use of relatively fine pitch gearing and wherein provision is made for mounting the differential gearing within the transmission assembly and for braking the transmission output shafts at a location adjacent the differential side gears.
