The proximal portion has a medial periphery (69) and includes surface features (64) on a substantial portion of its proximal portion. The surface features are positioned to optimally transfer load from the prosthesis to the long bone.

The spacer assembly includes a spacer having opposite ends and a side wall extending between the opposite ends and at least one end cap coupled to at least one of the opposite ends of the spacer. Each end cap includes an inner end facing the spacer, an outer end having a serrated surface, and a side wall extending between the inner and outer ends. The side wall of each end cap is formed for engagement with the side wall of the spacer to provide a mechanical connection between the end cap and the spacer.

Each stem-body element includes a collar to be superimposed on the resected level of the bone, said collar providing a male taper at its outer diameter. Each head member is formed with an inner surface providing a corresponding female taper for receiving the male taper of each stem-body element. The engagement of the female taper on the male taper defines a space above the collar and a passageway extending from the space between the head member and the collar and provides a mechanical connection between the head and the stem-body element.
