Patent number: 11421495Abstract: An apparatus for providing a nonlabor-intensive process for sealing an opening formed in the ground with a chemically-inflatable bag is provided. The chemically-inflatable bag contains two or more chemical reactants, one of which is a liquid reactant that is initially stored in a liquid-containing device. The liquid-containing device has a removable cap, which upon removal or breakage of the cap permits the liquid reacting agent to contact and react with another reacting agent. The chemical reaction produces carbon dioxide, which expands the chemically-inflatable bag from a collapsed condition to an inflated condition. In the inflated condition, the chemically-inflatable bag fills and protects the integrity of the formed cavity.Type: GrantFiled: October 21, 2019Date of Patent: August 23, 2022Assignee: STEMLOCK, INCORPORATEDInventor: Thomas S. Jenkins

Patent number: 8152418Abstract: Embodiments provide an apparatus and methods for providing a nonlabor-intensive process for preventing backfill entering, or environmental factors eroding, a cavity formed in the ground. Preventing cavity degradation involves constructing a chemically-inflatable bag that separates two or more chemical reactants by creases and cylindrical coils formed in the chemically-inflatable bag. The creases typically act as watertight releasable seals that separate the chemical reactants while the cylindrical coils resist unintentional compromise of the releasable seals. However, the cylindrical coils are designed to give way upon the user applying an unfurling action on the chemically-inflatable bag; thus, furnishing a passageway for the chemical reactants to intermix and initiate a chemical reaction. The chemical reaction produces carbon dioxide as a by-product, which expands the chemically-inflatable bag from a collapsed condition to an inflated condition.Type: GrantFiled: July 16, 2009Date of Patent: April 10, 2012Assignee: Stemlock, IncorporatedInventors: Sanford S. Jenkins, Thomas S. Jenkins

Patent number: 6722105Abstract: A method for making a chemically inflatable gas bag using technical grade acetic acid, water, and sodium bicarbonate is provided. The method includes pouring diluted acetic acid into an HDPE bag, putting sodium bicarbonate into a PVA bag, sealing these bags, and placing these bags within a nylon/PE bag. The method further includes folding the gas bag in such a manner so that it easily inflates and completely seals the borehole.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 2003Date of Patent: April 20, 2004Assignee: Stemlock, IncorporatedInventors: Sanford S. Jenkins, Thomas S. Jenkins, Geoffrey R. Robbins

Publication number: 20040007147Abstract: A chemically inflated gas bag for mining is provided. This gas bag includes a modified PVA bag that contains sodium bicarbonate and an HDPE bag that contains acetic acid. The PVA bag and the HDPE bag are contained within a nylon/PE bag. Preferably, when the HDPE bag is broken, the flow of acetic acid onto the PVA bag is controlled by a second bag having small holes therein surrounding the HDPE bag, allowing the gas bag to be lowered into a borehole before it inflates. Another aspect of the present invention is a method of making this gas bag. This method includes pouring diluted acetic acid into an HDPE bag, putting sodium bicarbonate into a PVA bag, sealing these bags, and placing these bags within a nylon/PE bag. The gas bag is folded in such a manner as to easily inflate and completely seal the borehole.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 9, 2003Publication date: January 15, 2004Applicant: STEMLOCK, INCORPORATEDInventors: Sanford S. Patent number: 6213212Abstract: A method of stemming a borehole (6) includes the steps of placing a first layer (16) of stemming in the borehole, placing a spherical body (20) in the borehole on top of the layer (16), the body being relatively incompressible and a diameter slightly smaller than the diameter of the borehole, and placing a second layer (18) of stemming in the borehole over the body. The stemming (16, 18) may be placed in the borehole either in direct contact with an explosive (8), or spaced from it by a gas bag (24) or the like form a deck (22). In accordance with an alternate application, the stemming layers (16, 18) may be placed in the borehole prior to placement of an explosive material such that it serves as backfill. Preferably, the stemming includes crushed rock and drill cuttings such as those produced during formation of the borehole. However, other available materials may also be used such as gravel.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 1999Date of Patent: April 10, 2001Assignee: Stemlock, IncorporatedInventors: Sanford S. Patent number: 5220882Abstract: A door and door frame enabling the conversion of a pet cage such as a Shoreline cage into an anesthetic or oxygen therapy chamber. The door frame is mounted on the cage using the same bolts as are used in the construction of the cage. The door and door frame are formed of acrylic plastic material, the door being hinged to the door frame. The door frame includes spacers to enable a tight seal with the cage. The door includes a gas inlet port and outlet port, a slidable latch to latch the door shut, a sealing gasket, and a pair of vents with slidable air tight covers. With the vents covered gas can be introduced into and vented from the cage. With the vents uncovered, the cage can be used as a normal ventilated cage for an animal.Type: GrantFiled: November 5, 1991Date of Patent: June 22, 1993Inventor: Thomas S. Jenkins
