    Abstract: A handheld spectrometer apparatus and system for testing and characterizing samples. The spectrometer is connected to a mobile computing device and can be used to perform chemical analyses in the field. In one example, the spectrometer includes an optical system with a dichroic beamsplitter and a collection lens. The collection lens can be oriented along a first axis, and the dichroic beamsplitter oriented along a second axis that is at a 45-degree angle relative to the first axis. A photoreceptor of the spectrometer can capture image data as light passes through the optical system. The image data can be passed to a deep neural network (DNN) model on the mobile computing device that is trained to detect and quantify one or more contaminants.
