  • Patent number: 4623953
Abstract: Disclosed is a dielectric fluid which comprises about 5 to about 40 molar percent of a first arene compound having up to seven substituent alkenyl carbon atoms and about 60 to about 95 molar percent of a diluent. The diluent can be mineral oil, a second arene compound having up to seven substituent alkyl carbon atoms which are hydrocarbons, hydrocarbon ethers, or a mixture thereof, or a mixture of a mineral oil and a second arene compound. Also preferably included in the dielectric fluid is about 0.5 to about 5% of a free-radical polymerization inhibitor. A capacitor and a transformer containing the dielectric fluid are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4537803
Abstract: A fluid, insulating composition, useful for casting around conductors, is made from a liquid, polymerizable organic resin system, and a liquid, non-polymerizable organopolysiloxane dielectric filler partially soluble in the organic resin system and having the structural formula:(R).sub.3 --Si[OSi(R).sub.2)].sub.n OSi(R).sub.3,where n=0 to about 10, and each R group is selected from H, alkyl having from 1 to 6 carbons, and phenyl, where the dielectric is added in an amount such that, upon polymerization of the organic resin system to form a resin matrix containing dielectric filler, the dielectric will flow or diffuse through the resin matrix into cavities or voids in or bordering the composition or near any insulated conductors or other insulated articles.

  • Patent number: 4307364
Abstract: An iron core shunt reactor is constructed of a plurality of foil windings coaxially positioned along an iron core a discrete distance from each other. A coolant circulates axially along the core and radially outward between each of the foil windings providing the shunt reactor with improved thermal characteristics.

  • Patent number: 4276184
Abstract: Dielectric fluids are disclosed which comprise about 20 to 95% of a non-halogenated organic ester which is liquid between -20.degree. C. and 150.degree. C. and which has a dissipation factor of less than about 10% at 100.degree. C., and about 5% to 80% of a non-halogenated, aromatic hydrocarbon or ether, which is soluble in the ester, has 1 to 2 rings, and has a dissipation factor of less than about 10% at 100.degree. C. The preferred dielectric fluid is about 75 to 90% diisononyl phthalate and about 10 to 25% diphenyl oxide. An anti-oxidant and/or an additive to resist the effects of corona (partial discharges) are preferably included in the dielectric fluid. A capacitor containing a paper, film, or composite of these, impregnated with the dielectric fluid, is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4266264
Abstract: A capacitor is disclosed of layers of metal foil alternating with insulating sheets impregnated with a dielectric fluid. The dielectric fluid comprises isopropyl biphenyl of which at least about 55% by weight is the meta isomer. The dielectric fluid forms a glassy, amorphous phase at low temperatures rather than a crystalline solid.

  • Patent number: 4054937
Abstract: A capacitor is disclosed of layers of metal foil alternating with insulating sheets impregnated with a dielectric fluid. The dielectric fluid comprises a mixture of 80 to 99% by weight mono-ethylated, mono-propylated, or mono-butylated biphenyl, biphenyl oxide, or biphenyl methane and about 1 to about 20% by weight di-ethylated, di-propylated, or di-butylated biphenyl, biphenyl oxide, or biphenyl methane.
