  • Patent number: 7139601
Abstract: A system for use during a medical or surgical procedure on a body. The system generates an image representing the position of one or more body elements during the procedure using scans generated by a scanner prior or during the procedure. The image data set has reference points for each of the body elements, the reference points of a particular body element having a fixed spatial relation to the particular body element. The system includes an apparatus for identifying, during the procedure, the relative position of each of the reference points of each of the body elements to be displayed. The system also includes a processor for modifying the image data set according to the identified relative position of each of the reference points during the procedure, as identified by the identifying apparatus, said processor generating a displaced image data set representing the position of the body elements during the procedure.

  • Publication number: 20020198533
Abstract: The invention disclosed herein relates to a site preparation guide for use in conjunction with intervertebral implants. In particular, the site preparation guide contains a hollow body, lumen and interior surface adapted to accommodate and control the positioning of a surgical tissue removal device during the creation of the implant site. The site preparation guide of the invention can further include side openings through the body of the guide to accommodate and control the positioning of a surgical drill, an integrated intervertebral distractor, and a distal endplate which serves as a drilling template for an implant having a corresponding endplate. The site preparation guide is a unitary, one-piece, sterilizable device. Also disclosed herein is a method of preparing an orthopedic intervertebral site using the site preparation guide of the invention and surgical kit including the guide.

  • Patent number: 6042540
Abstract: A surgical retractor with interchangeable retractor blades allows the retractor blades to be positioned in an incision before being side-loaded into the retractor body and locked in place. The surgical retractor uses a connector head with a circumferential groove that fits in a side-loading socket and is locked in place with a cam that fits in the circumferential groove. A release lever releases the cam and allows the retractor blades to be removed.
