  • Patent number: 5048980
Abstract: The bearing housing has a ring which is molded within the housing and is in front of a leading face of the outer race. The ring molded in the housing restricts diametrical expansion of that portion of the housing which is forward of the leading face of the outer race.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 19, 1990
Date of Patent: September 17, 1991
    Assignee: The Torrington Company
    Inventor: Thorn W. Dickinson
  • Patent number: 4907898
Abstract: The bearing has structure for retaining the cage and roller assembly in a single flanged roller bearing race. The structure includes a single flange race which retains a cage and roller assembly by means of a small flange on a cage end rim which cooperates with a shoulder formed on the flange of the race.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 3, 1989
Date of Patent: March 13, 1990
    Assignee: The Torrington Company
    Inventor: Thorn W. Dickinson
  • Patent number: 4872770
Abstract: An end seal is provided at each axial end of the bearing. The structure of the bearing and the structure of the end seal is such that the axial length, radial length, and bearing capacity of the new bearing is substantially the same as the standard axial length, radial width, and roller member capacity of bearings without seals.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 20, 1989
Date of Patent: October 10, 1989
    Assignee: The Torrington Company
    Inventor: Thorn W. Dickinson
  • Patent number: 4726696
Abstract: A resilient annular bearing seal having an inner surface defining a central opening, an outer surface defining the seal outer periphery, and first and second side walls between the inner and outer surface and on opposite sides of the seal, the seal further having a circumferentially continuous sealing lip extending axially outwardly from the first side wall, the first side wall having a relieved portion adjacent to the sealing lip for receiving the sealing lip. The seal may include a sealing shoulder adjacent to the outer surface and the first side wall. The seal may also include at least one lip extending radially inwardly from the inner surface, and a sealing shield adjacent to the first side wall and the inner surface and extending both radially inwardly and axially outwardly.
    Type: Grant

    Assignee: The Torrington Company
Inventors: Thorn W. Dickinson, David H. Morse
  • Patent number: 4588312
Abstract: An antifriction bearing having inner and outer race rings and a seal ring featuring a multiplicity of resilient seal ring retaining projections for compressive wedging engagement within a retaining groove of the outer bearing ring.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 18, 1985
Date of Patent: May 13, 1986
Assignee: Fafnir Bearing - Division of The Torrington Company
Inventors: Thorn W. Dickinson, Gilbert W. Geiger, deceased
  • Patent number: 4270415
Abstract: The invention contemplates an improved mechanical traction drive with a hydraulically implemented single control whereby a desired range of speed ratios between input and output shafts is selectively available, without requiring clutch connection to the power source, such as a battery-operated electric motor. The transmission employs a combination of completely mechanical friction-roller and meshing-gear planetary systems which are connected at all times, whether the single control is operated to call for a forward drive or a stop, and whether the motor is run in the direction to produce a forward or a reverse drive of the output shaft. Provision is made for automatically downshifting and upshifting the transmission via hydraulic means, in response to input-torque requirements and/or output-torque limitations.

  • Patent number: 4174640
Abstract: The invention contemplates an improved traction-drive transmission of the variety in which plural planet wheels are radially displaceable in orbital motion about an axially opposed pair of axially shiftable sun wheels and within an axially opposed pair of rotationally fixed reaction rings, said planet wheels having constant angular-contact with the wheels and rings of both pairs. An axially fixed pivotal reference between the sun wheels is used for linked connection of the sun wheels such that displacement of the respective sun wheels is always equal in magnitude but in opposite axial directions with respect to the axially fixed reference, thus assuring that the instantaneous radius of planet-wheel orbit between the sun wheel and reaction ring on one axial side of the fixed reference will at all times match the instantaneous radius of planet-wheel orbit between the sun wheel and reaction ring on the other axial side of the fixed reference.

  • Patent number: 4098145
Abstract: The invention contemplates an improved mechanical traction drive providing a single control whereby a desired range of speed ratios between input and output shafts is selectively available, without requiring clutch connection to the power source, such as an internal-combustion engine. The transmission involves a combination of completely mechanical friction-roller and meshing-gear planetary systems which are connected at all times, whether the single control is operated to call for a forward drive, a stop or a reverse drive of the output shaft. For the particular disclosed form, provision is made for automatic downshifting reaction to increasing load, and major axial-reaction forces are self-contained by rotating mechanism, thus (a) avoiding substantial axial force components on main-bearings of the mechanism, and (b) reducing to very small magnitudes the requisite force for selective control actuation.
