  • Patent number: 9920744
Abstract: The present subject matter is directed to systems and methods for detecting rotor asymmetry of a wind turbine. The method includes measuring wind condition at a location downwind of the rotor for a plurality of rotor positions. Another step includes storing the measured wind condition(s) in predetermined wind bins. The method also includes analyzing the stored wind conditions for each of the predetermined wind bins. If a particular wind bin reaches a certain threshold of captured data points, then the method includes determining a variance between each of the stored wind conditions for the predetermined wind bins that have reached the threshold, wherein a variance between any one of the measured wind conditions greater than a predetermined amount is indicative of rotor asymmetry.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 4, 2015
Date of Patent: March 20, 2018
    Assignee: General Electric Company
    Inventor: Thorsten Honekamp

  • Publication number: 20110135474
Abstract: A method for temperature calibration of a strain sensor for a rotor blade of a wind turbine is provided, the method including operating the wind turbine in a mode in which substantially no bending of the rotor blade due to wind occurs, repeatedly measuring gravitationally induced bending moments of the rotor blade for a plurality of temperatures measured at the place of the strain sensor, determining a temperature dependency of the strain sensor on the temperature, calibrating the strain sensor based on the determined temperature dependency of the strain sensor such that the temperature dependency of the strain sensor is compensated.

  • Publication number: 20100111695
Abstract: An apparatus according to an embodiment comprises a wind turbine with a hub supporting a blade, and a sensor disposed and configured to monitor the blade and to produce a respective output signal. A computer processor disposed and configured to receive the output signal of the sensor executes a computer software application to facilitate comparing the output signal to a predetermined value to determine whether solid water is present at the blade and providing an indication of solid water build-up when solid water is present.

  • Patent number: 7487673
Abstract: A method for ice detection for a wind turbine is provided. The method includes providing an ice condition threshold parameter adapted for distinguishing a condition during which icing may occur and a condition during which icing may not occur, measuring a wind velocity with a first anemometer, wherein the first anemometer being of a first type, measuring a wind velocity with a second anemometer, wherein the second anemometer being of a second type, and wherein the second type is different from the first type, evaluating, for a condition during which icing may occur, a deviation of the wind velocity measured with the first anemometer and the wind velocity measured with the second anemometer, and determine whether the deviation exceeds a limit value based on a calibration conducted under a condition during which icing may not occur.
