Publication number: 20120124470Abstract: An audio display system includes a pointing device configured to address locations within an interaction field, a sound system adapted to communicate with the pointing device, and—an object mapping unit adapted to communicate with the sound system. The object mapping unit is configured to generate a map identifying locations within the interaction field that correspond to a representation of an object to be displayed such that the interaction field is segmented into an exterior region and an interior region of the representation of the object. The sound system is configured to provide an object-locating sound when the pointing device addresses a location in the exterior region so as to guide a user to further address the interaction field at least one of closer to or further away from the interior region of the object.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 17, 2011Publication date: May 17, 2012Applicant: The Johns Hopkins UniversityInventors: James E. Patent number: 5475497Abstract: A model-based printing method and system for generating halftone output images corresponding to gray-scale-coded input signals. Models for individual two-level (e.g., black on white) printer types allow predicted printer error signals to be generated which can be used to modify the gray-scale coded signals in such manner as to produce binary signals which, when applied to the printer, create halftone images of enhanced quality. In an alternative embodiment binary signals are selected which minimize an error function based on the difference between (i) a predicted perceived image corresponding to the gray scale inputs as filtered by an eye-model filter and (ii) the halftone image resulting from filtering of the binary sequence by a filter modeling the printer followed by the eye-model filter.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 1993Date of Patent: December 12, 1995Assignee: AT&T IPM Corp.Inventors: David L. Neuhoff, Thrasyvoulos N. Pappas, Nambirajan Seshadri

Patent number: 5473439Abstract: A model-based printing method and system for generating color halftone output images corresponding to color input signals. Models for individual printer types allow predicted printer error signals to be generated which can be used to modify the color signals in such manner as to produce output signals which, when applied to the printer, create color halftone images of enhanced quality. In an alternative embodiment, output image signals are selected which minimize an error function based on the difference between (i) a predicted perceived image corresponding to the color image input as filtered by an eye-model filter and (ii) the color halftone image resulting from filtering of the output image by a filter modeling the printer followed by the eye-model filter.Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 1992Date of Patent: December 5, 1995Assignee: AT&T Corp.Inventor: Thrasyvoulos N. Patent number: 5309526Abstract: An image-processing system for perceptual coding of images by analyzing one or more images to determine levels of imperceptible noise and encoding a first image to produce encoded values without introducing noise exceeding a determined level of imperceptible noise is disclosed. Analyzing of images is carried out under a set of user determined conditions comprising viewing distance and lighting. The encoded image is communicated and decoded to produce representation of the first image for display. As part of displaying the representation of the first image, a halftoning process is carried out. The halftoning process may comprise the interpolation of data values of the representation of the first image as well as the addition of micro-dither to the representation. Illustrative halftoning techniques include classical halftoning, least-squares halftoning, and error diffusion halftoning. Printer model-based halftoning techniques for both least-squares halftoning and error diffusion halftoning are presented.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 1991Date of Patent: May 3, 1994Assignee: AT&T Bell LaboratoriesInventors: Thrasyvoulos N.
