    Abstract: A coextruded, multilayer polymeric film having a core layer including a surfactant and at least one outer layer is placed on a forming structure. The forming structure moves in a direction parallel to the direction of travel of the multilayer film and carries the multilayer film in that direction. A fluid pressure differential is applied across the thickness of the multilayer film along the direction of movement of the forming structure. The fluid pressure differential is sufficiently great to cause the multilayer film to conform with the forming structure forming a formed polymeric web. The formed polymeric web is exposed to a temperature which is sufficiently great enough to allow the surfactant in the core layer to migrate to the outer layer to form a surfactant treated formed polymeric web.

    Abstract: Biodegradable, liquid impervious multilayer film compositions are disclosed. In particular, the films comprise composite structures derived from multilayer combinations of biodegradable polymers. The biodegradable polymers are selected from the categories of moisture sensitive polymers, thermally sensitive polymers, mechanically limited polymers, polymers not easily processed into films, hydrolytically cleavable polymers, and degradable elastomers. Optionally, the multilayer films may further comprise additional adhesive tie layers. The biodegradable polymers are combined in various ways to overcome the deficiencies of the individual components, yet at the same time impart specific performance properties to the film. The multilayer film compositions are suitable for use as backsheets in disposable absorbent products including diapers, adult incontinent pads, sanitary napkins, pantiliners, and the like.

The predetermined mechanically manipulatable portion of the elastically shirrable segment preferably comprises an elastomeric monomer which is maintained in a prestretched and tensioned condition in the desired direction of shirring. The opposed ends of the elastically shirrable segment in the article are interconnected to one another through the prestretched and tensioned elastomeric member.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a process for debossing and perforating a substantially continuous web of substantially planar thermoplastic film, using a forming structure having a patterned forming surface with holes and an opposed surface. The forming structure is open from the holes in the forming surface to the opposed surface. The forming structure moves in a direction of the length of the web of film and carries the web of film in that direction. The web of film is substantially entirely molten. A fluid differential pressure is substantially continuously applied across the thickness of the web of film from a first position along the direction of movement of the forming structure to a second position. The first and second positions are fixed relative to the moving forming structure. The fluid differential pressure is sufficiently great to cause the first surface of the web of film to be urged against the forming surface and to cause perforations to be created in the web of film.
