Abstract: A software environment (300) is established in a portable multimode communication device (PMCD) (100) in which a plurality of software applications (310, 312, 314, 316) are executing. Each software application performs a predetermined function using a hardware set. The hardware set includes a plurality of hardware resources (204, 206, 209, 210, 218, 220, 222, 104, 226, 236, 228, 232, 230, 234) provided on the PMCD. The PMCD will periodically evaluate a usage scenario and, based on this evaluation, allocates to each software application selected ones of the plurality of hardware resources comprising the hardware set. The allocation of hardware resources comprising each hardware set is dynamically varied in response to the evaluating.

The electronic device includes a device body having at least one accessory interface and at least one display device positioned on a surface of the device body. The electronic device also includes a display driver device communicatively coupled to the display device and configured for receiving data for presentation on the display device and generating signals for causing the data to be presented on the display device. In the electronic device, the display driver device selects one orientation from a plurality of pre-defined orientations for the data on the display device based at least on a current orientation of the device body and a status of the accessory interface.

Abstract: The option management approach for SDRs includes control of installation and/or access to waveform features and/or platform features. A software-defined radio may include an antenna, a radio transceiver coupled to the antenna, and at least one memory storing a master feature database including a plurality of selectable waveform features and a plurality of selectable platform features, and a selected options database including selected waveform features and selected platform features from the master feature database. A controller cooperates with the at least one memory to configure the selected options database based upon an input options file and to permit reconfiguration of the selected options database based upon a subsequent input options file. The controller also cooperates with the radio transceiver and the selected options database to operate the SDR based upon the selected waveform features and the selected platform features.
