A method is disclosed for sequestering polyvalent metal ions using .alpha.,.alpha.'-carboxyalkoxy succinic acid or salts thereof. A method for sequestering polyvalent metal ions is disclosed using .alpha.,.alpha.'-carboxyalkoxy succinic acid or salts thereof in combination with a surfactant.
