  • Patent number: 4279434
Abstract: A ski brake has a pair of ski elements flanking the ski and each formed by a pair of wires which in the braking position with the ski element projecting down below the bottom of the ski extend at an angle to each other, and which in the rest position extend parallel to the normal displacement direction of the ski and to each other. One of the legs of each of these elements is pivoted about an axis fixed on the ski and the other is pivoted about an axis which can be moved toward and away from the immovable axis on the ski for swinging of the elements up and down between the brake and rest positions. A spring is provided either in the form of a springy joint between the lower ends of the two legs or as a separate compression spring to urge the legs into the brake position. An actuator is displaceable from a raised or advanced position into a depressed position to move the brake elements into the rest position and is similarly urged into the raised or advanced position by the spring.

  • Patent number: 4239254
Abstract: A ski has a heel or toe clamp which is displaceable between a down position holding a skiboot on the ski and an up position freeing the skiboot from the ski. An elongated brake element is pivoted on the ski for movement between a rest position parallel to the ski and a braking position transverse to the ski and extending downwardly below the bottom surface thereof. This element carries a lateral projection which engages in a laterally open recess formed on the clamp or in a rail carried on the clamp so that as the clamp pivots into the up position it pivots the brake element into the braking position. The recess may have a laterally inclined camming surface that further swings the brake element from a position overlying the upper surface of the ski into a position spaced laterally from the ski on displacement of the element from the braking to the rest position.

  • Patent number: 4234027
Abstract: A tire-chain assembly for a vehicle-mounted wheel basically comprises annular inner and outer holders respectively engaging the inner and outer faces of the wheel. At least one traction chain crisscrosses over the road-engaging surface of the wheel between the two holders. The inner holder is provided with a flexible element that tightens the chain on the road-engaging surface. The outer end of the flexible element, which may be a chain, a rope or the like, is then secured to the holder on one of the surfaces of the wheel. There is provided a tightening mechanism so as to ensure self-locking of the tire-chain assembly on the wheel.

  • Patent number: 4227714
Abstract: A device for braking a ski upon the release thereof from a ski boot which comprises a mounting plate affixed to the upper surface of the ski and a preferably one-piece U-shaped stirrup of spring wire having a bight and a pair of offset shanks received in and swingably mounted on the mounting plate. Upon depression of the bight of the spring-wire stirrup by the ski boot, the stirrup is deformed and swings a pair of brake elements or blades into an inoperative position parallel to the longitudinal edges of the ski. The deformation of the stirrup, because of nonplanarity of the stirrup or camming formations on the mounting plate, provides a prestress thereto which, upon release of the stirrup by the ski boot, causes the brake elements to swing into an operative position where they inhibit free flight of the ski.

  • Patent number: 4182523
Abstract: A ski brake has a pair of elongated braking elements which extend parallel to each other and are pivoted about their middle portions about a pivot axis extending parallel to the upper surface and transverse to the longitudinal direction of a ski so that these braking elements can pivot between a rest position parallel to the ski and a braking position transverse to the ski and digging into the snow under the ski. An actuating member or plate is displaceable toward and away from the upper surface of the ski and is linked to the upper ends of the braking elements so that its displacement toward the surface of the ski will swing the elements into the rest position. In addition this actuating member is provided with links or similar means which tend to swing the lower ends of the braking elements inwardly above the surface of the ski so that they do not project laterally from the ski during use thereof.

  • Patent number: 4181321
Abstract: A pair of skis are provided on their upper surfaces with respective mounting plates each carrying a treadle depressible by the boot of the user, the treadle overlying the bight of a yoke biased into a rising position be a pair of inclined shanks traversing the mounting plate. The extremities of the wire yoke carry blade-shaped brake elements which in the absence of boot pressure project downwardly beyond the runner surface of the ski and have confronting inner edges formed with notches coming to lie at the level of that surface, the width of the notch exceeding the thickness of the blade whereby the outer blade edges of the other ski can be received in these notches to hold the two skis together in back-to-back position with their runner surfaces contacting each other.

  • Patent number: 4174853
Abstract: A ski brake for automatically braking the free flight of the ski upon the release of a ski boot therefrom comprises a mounting plate fixed to an upper surface of the ski and a bentspring wire having a bight lying in one plane and a pair of offset portions angularly bent from the shank of the bight lying in another plane and received in passages in the mounting plate so that the pressing of the bight toward the surface of the ski resiliently deforms the wire and loads the same so that it tends to spring back into an operative position when the ski boot is released from the surface of the ski. A pair of brake elements are mounted upon the bent-spring wire so as to extend generally transversely to the ski in the operative position of the brake. The brake elements are extended above the surface of the ski in this latter position so that they can be engaged by the ski boot so as to serve as actuators which can be held down by the ski boot and released when the ski boot is removed from the upper ski surface.

  • Patent number: 4171826
Abstract: A ski brake includes a pair of elongated levers each situated at one side of a ski and pivotable between an extended and an intermediate position laterally of the ski. A free end portion of the lever engages the surface on which the ski is supported when the ski becomes detached from the ski boot. A spring arrangement urges the respective levers toward their extended positions. The levers are further mounted on the ski for angular displacement between the intermediate position and a retracted position in which the free ends of the levers are located over the upper surface of the ski so as not to interfere with the proper operation of the ski. Another spring arrangement urges the levers from their retracted to their intermediate positions when the ski boot becomes detached from the ski.
