In one embodiment of the invention, a multi-platform component installation package is provided which includes components sufficient to assemble complete installation images for installation onto different specified target systems of respective different platform types, and selected ones of the components are assembled together so as to assemble a complete installation image for installation onto a specific one of the different specified target systems.
