The invention allows users to plug into the network and access not only the network that their computer is connected to but also to the Internet, the Worldwide Web and the individual's email. This is particularly useful to visitors to multiple unit buildings such as hotels. Not only can the service be provided by the server and method of the invention connected to and carried out on the network but it does not require manual configuration changes to the computer or new software or hardware for the computer. In situations where access is to be controlled this is done through a registration driver and module. Only registered guests have access to the network and the services and access it provides. The invention determines and assigns addressing information to properly direct traffic to and from the computer.

The server manages VLAN based on the request from a user for creating/deleting/joining/leaving VLANs. The server allows user to control groupings and overcomes the VLAN limit with the filtering policies on the switching infrastructure. In the second aspect of invention, the server and method provide a specific address based on requests from users. The server dynamically handles the management and facilitation of the requests. The server offers users reassignment of IP addresses from a first set of characteristics to a second set of characteristics with minimal user intervention. This allows users the ability to run a broader range of protocols. In the third aspect of invention, the server and method is provided to provide a routable IP address to a remote computer.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are described for providing data services to a mobile data device through a packet data service node system and a wireless data network. The method includes the steps of exchanging data between the mobile data device and packet data service node system at least partially through the wireless data network using a tunneling protocol, decoding the tunneling protocol within a programmers space of a general purpose computing platform of the packet data service node system, determining an identity of the user from the decoded tunneling protocol and providing at least some data services to the identified user based upon a predetermined services list associated with the identified user.
