An inflation fluid source (22) provides inflation fluid for inflating the inflatable tubular structure. The inflatable tubular structure (14) includes an inflatable bladder (50) and a tubular outer shell (52) that surrounds the inflatable bladder. The outer shell (52) has a length and a diameter and includes a plurality of slits (60) that extend longitudinally along the outer shell in a direction generally parallel to the length of the outer shell. The diameter of the outer shell (52) increases and the length of the outer shell decreases when the inflatable bladder (50) is inflated.

The support (20) enables the seat (11) to move, relative to the support (20), from the forward position to the rearward position in the vehicle (12) during a frontal vehicle collision (13). The seat (11) moves from the forward position to the rearward position due to a force transmitted to the seat (11) through the legs (16) of the vehicle occupant (15).

    Abstract: A safety apparatus (12) for helping to protect an occupant of a vehicle having a side structure (16) comprises an inflatable protection device (14) having an inflated condition disposed between the vehicle occupant and the side structure. The safety apparatus (12) also comprises an inflator assembly (10) for inflating the protection device (14) and for maintaining the protection device in the inflated condition for at least five seconds. The inflator assembly (10) includes at least one container (30) having gas (52) stored under pressure. In a preferred embodiment, the inflator assembly (10) comprises a primary outlet passage (70) connected with the container for releasing inflation fluid (52) from the inflator assembly at a relatively high rate over a relatively short period of time. The inflator assembly (10) also preferably has a secondary outlet passage (90) connected with the container for releasing inflation fluid from the inflator assembly at a relatively low rate for about five to ten seconds.

    Abstract: An inflator (10) for providing inflation fluid to inflate an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device includes a pressure vessel (12) defining a chamber (30) for inflation fluid. The pressure vessel (12) has a passage (48) for inflation fluid flow from the chamber (30). A burst disk (52) blocks fluid flow through the passage (48). A support (62) has a tubular portion (64) with a first end (67) spaced apart from the burst disk (52) prior to the inflation fluid entering the pressure vessel (12) and a second end (68) opposite the first end. The burst disk (52) deforms into contact with the first end (67) due to the pressure of the inflation fluid when the inflation fluid is disposed in the chamber (30). An actuatable igniter assembly (60) bursts the burst disk (52) to enable fluid to flow from the chamber (30) through the passage (48). The second end (68) of the tubular portion (64) engages the igniter assembly (60).

    Abstract: An apparatus (10) for helping to protect an occupant of a vehicle comprises a knee bolster (20) for engaging at least one leg of the occupant to restrain the occupant. The knee bolster (20) comprises a metal tube (50) having a collapsed condition and an expanded condition. The metal tube (50) when in the expanded condition positions the knee bolster (20) to help protect the vehicle occupant. The apparatus (10) also comprises a pyrotechnic transfer line (60, 62, 64) extending within the collapsed metal tube (50). The pyrotechnic transfer line (60, 62, 64) when ignited generates fluid under pressure in the metal tube to expand the metal tube from the collapsed condition to the expanded condition. The apparatus (10) further comprises an igniter (70) for igniting the pyrotechnic transfer line (60, 62, 64).

The system (10) also includes a length of seat belt webbing (26) extensible about an occupant (28) of the vehicle. An actuatable mechanism (22) is operatively connected with the webbing (26). The actuatable mechanism (22) is operable to effect a tightening of the webbing (26) around the vehicle occupant (28) upon the sensor signal (18) indicating that the distance between the vehicle (12) and the adjacent object (14) is within a predetermined distance.

The sheet member (50) has a first condition in which the sheet member is spaced from the vehicle floor (14) by a first distance. The apparatus (10) includes an actuatable power source (84) for pulling at least the first end portion (54) of the sheet member (50) to tension the sheet member between the first end portion and the second end portion (52). The apparatus (10) also includes a vehicle crash sensor (80) for actuating the power source (84) in the event of a vehicle collision to tension the sheet member (50) and move the sheet member from the first condition to a second condition.

The system includes at least one sensor (14-28) for sensing a first occupant or vehicle condition and for providing a first output signal indicative of the sensed first condition. An radio frequency (RF) transmitter (40) electrically connected with the ECU (30) is selectively actuatable by the ECU to transmit first and second individually coded RF signals (72, 80).

The retaining ring (16) encircles the inflator (14) and defines an annular chamber (88) disposed radially outward of a plurality of outlet openings (26) in the inflator (14). The retaining ring (16) includes a circumferentially spaced plurality of exit ports (90) in fluid communication with the annular chamber (88). The annular chamber (88) and the exit ports (90) redirect the inflation fluid flowing out of the outlet openings (26) into the inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (12). The inflation fluid is thus prevented from impinging directly on an inner surface (50) of the inflatable occupant protection device as the inflation fluid is being directed out of the inflator (14).

The deflector flanges (30) are spaced radially from the outlet openings (26) and are radially aligned with the outlet openings. The deflector flanges (30) completely overlie the outlet openings (26). When the inflator (14) is actuated, the deflector flanges (30) deflect the inflation fluid flowing from the outlet openings (26) and thereby prevent the inflation fluid from impinging directly the inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (12) as the inflation fluid is being directed out of the inflator (14).

An ignitable material (110) in the combustion chamber (84), when ignited, rapidly increases the fluid pressure inside the combustion chamber. An electrically actuatable initiator (112) ignites the ignitable material (110). The base portion (72) of the cup-shaped wall includes a predefined rupture portion (90). The rupture portion (90) ruptures when the fluid pressure inside the combustion chamber (84) reaches a predetermined elevated fluid pressure level to form an orifice (120) through which the inflation fluid in the combustion chamber flows.
