  • Patent number: 8559981
Abstract: A system and method for controlling communication modes of a personal communication device traveling in a vehicle. The system includes a communication center configured to provide communication services, a personal communication device (PCD) configured to communicate with the communication center, and a controller installed in a vehicle. The communication center is configured to selectively disable any of the PCD communication modes when the PCD is residing or traveling in the vehicle. Which communication modes are disabled may be based on a customer profile. The system and method provide a way for a parent to limit the communication modes of PCD used by their child, especially when the child is traveling in and presumably operating a particular vehicle such as the family car. The system and method may also be used by employers to limit the PCD communication modes available to employees operating company vehicles.

  • Publication number: 20120117198
Abstract: A communication system for recasting information communicated between a host system (smart phone, internet server) outputting an application generated signal, and a remote interface (in-vehicle display) so application content is displayed in a specified manner on the remote interface in accordance with a recast rule. The recast rules define how to interpret or analyze the application generated signal and recast content in that signal for output by the remote interface. The recast rules may be configured to detect control commands input by an operator, and in accordance with recast rules, generate a host control signal configured to operate some aspect of the host system.

  • Publication number: 20110158178
Abstract: A communication system for distributing data over an area. The system includes a base station configured to transmit common data over a range that is within the area. The system also includes a plurality of nodes, wherein each node is configured to receive the common data from the base station when within the range, receive the common data from another node when within the area, store and transport the common data, transmit the common data to another node within the area, and display the common data. Neither the base station nor nodes individually are capable of transmitting data over the entire area, but the features of the nodes provide for propagating the data by passing the data from node to node when two nodes are within relatively close proximity to each other.

  • Patent number: 7944967
Abstract: A technique for addressing frame loss in a video system includes a number of steps. Initially, a first video stream and a second video stream are received. The first and second video streams each include related video information having a plurality of video frames. At least one of the first and second video streams is buffered and lost or corrupted video frames associated with the first video stream are replaced with uncorrupted video frames from the second video stream.

  • Patent number: 7699133
Abstract: The present invention provides a system and method for degrading and disabling a vehicle's engine throttle. The vehicle disable system includes a throttle position sensor that generates a throttle position signal, an electronic control module (“ECM”) input connected to the ECM on which the throttle position sensor provides the throttle position signal to the ECM, and an override input that enables an idling signal to be transmitted to the ECM instead of the throttle position signal. The method of the present invention includes the steps of receiving an input signal related to the state of the driver input mechanism, interpreting the input signal, and at least one of degrading and disabling the throttle based on the interpretation of the input signal.

  • Patent number: 7697886
Abstract: The present invention involves a method for transmitting data within a specified band of allocated spectrum in a satellite digital transmission system. First a data stream is encoded according to a first encoding scheme, then a second data stream is generated according to a second encoding scheme. The second encoding scheme is incompatible with the first encoding scheme. The first and second data streams are transmitted at predetermined locations within the specified band, such as time slices within a time division multiplexing transmission system. The second data stream is generated by using a more efficient FEC algorithm, including turbo-convolutional, turbo-product, low density parity check, or repeat-accumulate encoders. The inventive receiver has an antenna for receiving RF signals and a demodulator coupled to the antenna for downconverting received RF signals into a data stream. A splitter then separates the data stream into first and second component data streams.

  • Patent number: 7558527
Abstract: A system and method of injecting audio content into a radio system is provided. The method includes the steps of receiving in a radio receiver a first RF signal from an antenna and processing the signal at a select frequency within a radio frequency band. The method also includes the step of providing audio content from an auxiliary device. The method also includes the step of modulating the audio content from the auxiliary device and replicating the modulated signal to generate a replicated RF signal at the multiple frequencies within the radio frequency band. The method further includes the step of injecting the replicated RF signal into the radio receiver.
