    Abstract: A surgical apparatus comprises an instrument body, an end effector, and a control module. The end effector is in communication with the handle assembly. The end effector is operable for use in a surgical procedure. The control module is in communication with the end effector. The end effector with the control module is able to deliver surgical energy as well as nerve excitation energy to a surgical site. A surgeon may detect stimulation of nervous tissue by visually observing the tissue twitch, and may adjust surgical technique accordingly. A sensor may be used to detect excitation of nervous tissue based on excitation caused by the nerve excitation energy.

    Abstract: A system includes an adjustable gastric band coupled with an injection port. The port includes sensors, a plate beneath a septum, and a vibration generator in communication with the sensors. A first sensor detects palpation through a patient's skin when the injection port is implanted in the patient. The vibration generator provides a vibratory response to detected palpation, thereby providing haptic feedback to a physician who is attempting to locate the injection port by palpating the patient. A second sensor detects a needle striking the plate, and the vibration generator provides a vibratory response to a detected needle strike. The vibration generator thereby provides haptic feedback to a physician to confirm that the needle has been successfully inserted through the septum. A pressure sensor may be used to provide vibratory feedback to the patient to indicate that an adjustment to the band is needed.

First and second coupling mechanism portions cooperatively couple the end effector assembly to the body assembly for use. A cartridge positionable between the instrument and a generator includes information regarding operating parameters unique to the selectively coupleable end effector assembly and/or the desired surgical procedure, such as information regarding setting a maximum current set point within an ultrasonic transducer. The instrument is programmable with operating parameter information while within a sealed and sterilized packaging unit.

The obturator has a distal end extending from the open distal end of the cannula when the obturator is inserted fully into the cannula. The recess is positioned along a portion of the length of the obturator to align with the lateral opening of the cannula when the obturator is inserted fully into the cannula.

    Abstract: A surgical system comprises an ultrasonic surgical instrument and a conduit. The conduit may be coupled with a vacuum source and/or a fluid source. The instrument comprises an ultrasonic transducer, a waveguide, and an end effector. The waveguide extends fully through the transducer, such that a distal end of the waveguide is distal to the distal end of the transducer and such that a proximal end of the waveguide is proximal to the proximal end of the transducer. The waveguide is operable to transmit ultrasonic vibrations from the transducer to the end effector. The waveguide defines a lumen in fluid communication with the conduit. The lumen is also in fluid communication with the end effector. The end effector may thus be used to deliver one or more of ultrasonic energy, suction, and/or fluid to a surgical site, in any suitable sequence or simultaneously.

The probe body is configured to be inserted into a vagina of the patient.     Abstract: A system for inserting components into a medical device includes a container and an attachment member. The attachment member is coupled to a sidewall having an opening and is configured to be coupled to a medical device. Utilizing the attachment member and opening, an insertable component may be inserted into a medical device within the container while limiting the risk of contamination to the interior of the container. Alternatively, a cutting knob and an alignment member mounted to a container may be used. Cutting knob and alignment member are coupled and a knife on cutting knob is rotated about alignment member to create an opening in the container to access the interior of the medical device. Another alternative includes sandwiching an insertable component between an attachable member and the medical device while the attachable member and medical device are contained within flexible packaging that may be torn away.

    Abstract: An electrosurgical device comprises an end effector, a cutting member, and en electromechanical driver. The end effector comprises a pair of jaws that clamp tissue. The jaws include electrodes that deliver RF energy to clamped tissue. The cutting member cuts tissue clamped between the jaws. The electromechanical driver drives the cutting member. A control module commands the electromechanical driver, and regulates the delivery of RF energy to the electrodes, based on a combination of user input and feedback signals from the electrodes and from the electromechanical driver. The device may provide tactile feedback to the user through the user input feature, based on a load encountered by the cutting member. The device may alert the user when the exterior of end effector makes incidental contact with tissue, to avoid inadvertently burning the tissue. The device may include a removable battery pack to power the electromechanical driver and the electrodes.

    Abstract: An apparatus for powering a medical device includes a battery pack, a connection feature on the battery pack, and a protective layer. In some versions the protective layer covers the battery pack and the connection feature to provide a fluid tight seal. In some versions, the connection feature comprises at least one electrode, which may pierce the protective layer to establish electrical communication with the medical device from within the protective layer such that a non-sterile battery pack could be used to deliver power to a sterile medical device without compromising sterility of the medical device. The protective layer may form a compartment. The at least one electrode may have a conical shape to facilitate piercing the protective layer.
