Publication number: 20200150728Abstract: The description relates to devices that can include first and second portions. A virtual magnetic hinge assembly can rotationally secure the two portions yet a user can separate the device portions as desired. One example can include a first elongate magnetic hinge assembly encapsulated in a first end of the first portion and a second elongate magnetic hinge assembly encapsulated in a first end of the second portion. The first and second elongate magnetic hinge assemblies can bias the first ends together while allowing the first and second portions to be rotated through a range of rotations.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 13, 2018Publication date: May 14, 2020Applicant: Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLCInventors: Timothy G. ESCOLIN, Sheila A. LONGO, Logan MILLER, Mary T. LEE, Michael F. DEILY, Scott D. SCHENONE, Young S. KIM

Publication number: 20200081584Abstract: The description relates to computing devices that have one or more displays. One example can manage the display as a unit and identify a change in a condition associated with the display. The example can alter at least one of a location, aspect ratio, or size of the unit based on the condition.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 11, 2018Publication date: March 12, 2020Applicant: Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLCInventors: Scott D. SCHENONE, Timothy G. ESCOLIN, Michael F. DEILY, David P. PLATT, Eli BAREL, Megan L. TEDESCO, Young S. KIM, Panos C. PANAY

Publication number: 20200050243Abstract: The description relates to hinged devices, such as hinged computing devices and associated input devices. One example can include first and second device portions and a hinge assembly rotatably securing the first portion and the second portion through a range of orientations. This example can also include a wedge-shaped input device extending between a first end having a first thickness and a second end having a second greater thickness. In a closed orientation the first and second portions simultaneously contact the first end and the second end.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 8, 2018Publication date: February 13, 2020Applicant: Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLCInventors: Young S. KIM, Scott D. SCHENONE, Timothy G. ESCOLIN, Panos C. PANAY

Patent number: 10001816Abstract: Modular computing device techniques are described. In one or more implementations, a computing device includes a display modular component including a housing, a display device physically and communicatively coupled to the housing via a hinge, and one or more display hardware elements disposed within the housing that are configured to output a display for display by the display device. The computing device also includes a computing modular component including a housing that is physically and communicatively coupled to the display modular component, a processing system disposed within the housing, and memory disposed within the housing. The processing system is configured to execute instructions stored by the processing system to generate a user interface for display by the display device of the display modular component.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 2016Date of Patent: June 19, 2018Assignee: Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLCInventors: Young Soo Kim, Timothy G. Escolin

Patent number: 9685984Abstract: Feet for a multi-position computing device are described. In one or more implementations, a multi-position computing device is configured to include a base and a display device connected to the base by a hinge mechanism. The hinge mechanism is operable to position the display device into multiple positions relative to the base including at least an upright position and a laid-down position. An arrangement of feet on the underside of the base is designed to facilitate dynamic movement of the device into the multiple positions. The arrangement of feet includes sliding feet that engage for sliding of the base across a surface when pressure is applied to the hinge mechanism for transitions between positions. The arrangement of feet also includes tacky feet that engage and resist sliding of the base across the surface in the absence of pressure applied to the hinge mechanism.Type: GrantFiled: March 25, 2016Date of Patent: June 20, 2017Assignee: Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLCInventors: Shalini Majumdar, Spencer Eggert, Michael Harding, Timothy G. Escolin, James Alec Ishihara
