Patent number: 6807846Abstract: The present invention provides an apparatus and method for evaluating the integrity of a seal on liquid-filled container. According to one aspect of the invention, the apparatus comprises a tank for containing a liquid solution and a clamp with a first and second member between which the container is engaged. The clamp is positioned with respect to the tank such that a portion of the container properly situated in the clamp will extend into the tank and contact the liquid solution. A ram and cylinder are operatively connected to the clamp to engage the container. A seat is provided to support a portion of the container such that at least a portion of the container supported by the seat will extend into the tank. A drill is provided to pierce a surface of the container to make an opening. The drill is positioned such that the opening can be made while the container is in the clamp and/or the seat such that at least a portion of the container extends into the tank.Type: GrantFiled: January 14, 2002Date of Patent: October 26, 2004Assignee: The Quaker Oats CompanyInventors: John J. Patent number: 5965617Abstract: The present invention provides a method and composition for controlling the growth of microorganisms in aqueous systems, such as industrial process waters. The method includes the steps of adding a synergistically effective amount of a biocide, 2-bromo-2-nitrostyrene ("BNS"), and an oxidant, peracetic acid, to industrial process waters to control microorganism growth. The composition of the present invention comprises a synergistically effective amount of a biocide, 2-bromo-2-nitrostyrene, and an oxidant, peracetic acid, to control microorganism growth. The method and composition of the present invention are particularly effective in the treatment of pulp and paper water processing systems.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 1998Date of Patent: October 12, 1999Assignee: ANGUS Chemical CompanyInventors: John L. Patent number: 4251011Abstract: A machine for picking up seeds from a mass of seeds and depositing the seeds individually comprises a row of suction heads each having a suction duct terminating in an orifice and a container for holding the mass of seeds. The row of heads are pivotally mounted and are provided with a driving mechanism which swings the heads to and fro along a path between a pick-up position in which each of the orifices is adjacent the container and a discharge position in which seeds picked up by suction through the orifices are discharged. In order to enable each head to discharge at the discharge position only a single natural seed rather than a pelleted seed, a wiper member is provided and extends parallel to the row of heads in their path between the pick-up position and the discharge position. The wiper member has a curved surface and the heads swing close to this surface just before they reach the discharge position.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 1979Date of Patent: February 17, 1981Inventors: Thomas W.
