  • Patent number: 8722844
Abstract: A polyamide composition is formed by combining a phosphorous containing catalyst with monomer starting materials under conditions suitable to cause polymerization of the monomer starting material into a low molecular weight polyamide material. The polyamide material, which may include remaining or residual catalyst, is then further polymerized via solid state polycondensation at a temperature suitable to form a high molecular weight polyamide material. The presence of the catalyst results in increased solid state polymerization rate and a final polyamide material composition with increased viscosity and a higher molecular weight.

  • Patent number: 6756444
Abstract: Oxygen scavenging barrier polyamide compositions exhibiting high oxygen scavenging capability as well as good coinjection stretch blow moldability characteristics suitable for making multilayer PET bottles with good clarity and delamination resistance are claimed in this invention. The polyamide compositions of this invention comprise a slow crystallizing polyamide blend comprising (i) an amorphous, semiaromatic polyamide homopolymer, copolymer or mixture thereof and (ii) a semicrystalline, aliphatic polyamide homopolymer, copolymer or mixture thereof wherein in the weight ratio of (i):(ii) ranges from about 99:1 to about 30:70; at least one polyamide-compatible, oxidizable polydiene; and at least one oxidation promoting metal salt catalyst. The multilayer PET bottles, made with the polyamide compositions of this invention as the barrier layer, are suitable for extended shelf-life packaging of oxygen-sensitive food and beverage products such as beer and juices.

Abstract: A composition comprising a polyamide, a reinforcing amount of glass fiber, and 1 to 25, preferably 5 to 25, and more preferably 10 to 20 percent by weight based on the weight of the polyamide of a core/shell polymer. The core/shell polymer comprises 40 to 90 and preferably 50 to 90 parts by weight of an elastomer core and 10 to 60 and preferably 10 to 50 parts by weight of a rigid thermoplastic polymer shell. The shell comprises an interpolymer of 20 to 100 parts by weight of an methyacrylic ester, 0 to 80 parts by weight styrene, and from 0 to 50 parts by weight of acylonitrile. The shell can also contain alkyl acrylates, allyl methacrylates, diallyl methacrylates, and the like. The methacrylic ester is preferably a lower alkyl methacrylate/such as methyl methacrylate. The core is an elastomer and can be a diene elastomer, an ethylene-propylene-diene rubber, an acrylic elastomer, or a polyurethane elastomer.
