Patent number: 11453133Abstract: Systems, methods, and apparatus are described for a locking folding knife having a handle lock and a safety switch arranged around and rotatable around a pivot axis of the knife. In an engaged position the switch overlaps at least a portion of the handle lock and prevents it from moving into an unlocked position. A spring, such as a wire form spring, can be arranged within a pocket of the switch, and when the switch is moved between engaged and disengaged positions the spring can be compressed generating a rotational bias on the switch urging the switch toward either the engaged or disengaged position.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 2019Date of Patent: September 27, 2022Assignee: Magpul Industries Corp.Inventors: Michael T. Mayberry, Danny R. Smith, Jr., Thomas Ward, Timothy Eric Roberts, Timothy James Galyean

Publication number: 20190143544Abstract: A folding knife includes a handle and a blade rotatably connected to the handle, the blade rotatable between a closed position and an opened position about a blade axis. A finger tab is useable to rotate the blade from the closed position to the opened position, the finger tab rotatably connected to the blade and rotatable between a retracted position and an extended position about a tab axis parallel to the blade axis. A torsion spring biases the finger tab toward the retracted position.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 14, 2017Publication date: May 16, 2019Applicant: KAI U.S.A., Ltd.Inventors: Gustavo Thome Cecchini, James MacNair, Timothy James Galyean

Patent number: 10071489Abstract: A folding knife includes a lockbar for automatically locking a knife blade in an opened position relative to a handle. A puck attached to the lockbar is configured to engage a tang of the blade to lock the blade in an open position relative to the handle.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 2015Date of Patent: September 11, 2018Assignee: KAI U.S.A., Ltd.Inventors: James MacNair, Timothy James Galyean, Craig Donald Kemp Green

Publication number: 20090193664Abstract: A locking mechanism for a folding knife includes a first locking element movably coupled to a handle of the knife for movement along a substantially flat recessed bearing surface from an unlocked position to a locked position and a second locking element having a central axis substantially parallel to a pivot axis of the knife, the second locking element biased in a direction substantially along the central axis for movement from an extended position to a depressed position and being adapted to receive a portion of the first locking element to prevent movement of the second locking element to the depressed position and thus inadvertent deployment or closure of the blade when the first locking element is in the locked position.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 30, 2009Publication date: August 6, 2009Applicant: KAI U.S.A., LTD., DBA KERSHAW KNIVESInventor: Timothy James Galyean

Patent number: 7458159Abstract: A folding knife includes a handle and a blade attached thereto and configured to rotate between an open position and a closed position. A locking element is coupled to the handle, while a pawl is coupled to the blade and configured to engage the locking element as the blade rotates to the closed position, such that the blade is locked in the closed position thereby. Opening pressure on the pawl causes it to release the locking element and also causes the blade to rotate from the closed position toward the open position. The knife blade may include a flicker positioned to extend from a back portion of the handle when the blade is in the closed position. The pawl is coupled to the flicker such that pressure on the flicker causes the pawl to release the locking moves the blade toward the open position. The folding knife may also include an opening assist mechanism.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 2005Date of Patent: December 2, 2008Assignee: Kai U.S.A., Ltd.Inventors: Timothy James Galyean, Kenneth J. Onion, Craig Green
