  • Patent number: 10331156
Abstract: A system and method for learning and asserting what portions of a utility GIS network model are incorrect or flawed as they relate to real world conditions, and what the correct real world relationships are in the field is described. The system and method leverage available smart grid data to assess the quality of a primary (GIS) source data set; quality data renders derived analyzes across the utility valid, sound, and action worthy. The system and method utilize existing partially correct electrical network distribution model data and various non-specialized source data including smart meter, spatial, and customer information data collected from the network to test, validate and suggest corrections to the connectivity model. By forming putative ground truth assignments between utility components, the system tests the assumptions by examining the geospatial proximity and correlating voltage and event data over time to form refined hypothesis.

  • Publication number: 20150153212
Abstract: A method of measuring a height of a fuel surface of fuel in an aircraft fuel tank. One or more images of the fuel surface are captured, each image including a fuel surface line where the fuel surface meets a structure. Each image is analysed in order to determine a height of the fuel surface line at three or more points in the image. If the fuel surface line is not a straight line, then an average angle of the fuel surface line can be determined from the points in the image by spatial averaging. Preferably a series of images of the fuel surface are captured over a time period, and an average height of the fuel surface is determined from the series of images by time averaging. The height of the fuel surface line(s) at three or more points is used to determine a volume of the fuel, a mass of the fuel, and/or an attitude of the fuel surface.

  • Patent number: 7084291
Abstract: A method of increasing the amount of diphenylcarbonate produced per amount of catalyst consumed in a phenol carbonylation process is described. Phenolic carbonylation produces water as a reaction product which reduces the turnover number (TON) of the catalyst. A mixture of a phenolic precursor, a base containing catalyst and co-catalyst components and at least one chemical additive comprising a halide or hydroxide of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal when carbonylated together under specific conditions increases the turnover number (TON) and water resistivity of a palladium catalyst. The metal halide likely makes the catalyst less susceptible to degradation by water hence increasing the reaction yield per weight of catalyst consumed.

  • Patent number: 6815565
Abstract: A method is described for the simultaneous preparation of p-bromophenols and p-benzoquinones, intermediates useful in the preparation of hydroquinones and 4,4′-dihydroxybiphenyls, respectively. Hydroquinones and 4,4′-dihydroxybiphenyls are useful monomers for the preparation of a variety of polymers. The method also comprises reducing the p-benzoquinone to its corresponding hydroquinone in the presence of the p-bromophenol. Limiting the amount of HBr present in the reaction mixture was shown to control the amount of benzoquinone produced. The method also allows for the recycling of many of the reagents used, thereby reducing the cost of producing each monomer.

  • Patent number: 6693221

Hydroquinones and 4,4′-dihydroxybiphenyls are useful monomers for the preparation of a variety of polymers. In one example phenol is reacted with in the presence of HBr, a catalytic amount of cupric bromide and a stoichiometric excess of oxygen under relatively mild conditions to provide a mixture of the phenol, 4-bromophenol, and 1,4-benzoquinone. Phenol conversion was 54 percent and selectivities for bromophenol and benzoquinone were 23% and 37% respectively. Limiting the amount of HBr present in the reaction mixture was shown to control the amount of benzoquinone produced.

  • Patent number: 5753198
Abstract: A method of fuel gas desulfurization comprises the steps of introducing fuel, such as coal, into a gasifier, heating the fuel in the gasifier to a temperature so as to form a gaseous fuel mixture containing sulfur compounds, and conveying the gaseous fuel mixture over a sulfur absorbing and surface-catalyzing zinc-based sorbent that catalyzes an exothermic reaction to locally increase the surface temperature of the sorbents, thereby enhancing the rate of desulfurization. Additionally, in accordance with the instant invention, the sulfur absorbing and surface-catalyzing zinc-based sorbent comprises a chemical composition of a metal selected from the group consisting of iron, cobalt, and molybdenum that catalyzes an exothermic reaction at the sorbent surface and an inert metal selected from the group consisting of titanium, zirconium, cerium and hafnium for desulfurization.
