Abstract: A sound processing system including a user headset for use in tactical military operations provides integrated sound and speech analysis including sound filtering and amplification, sound analysis and speech recognition for analyzing speech and non-speech sounds and taking programmed actions based on the analysis, recognizing language of speech for purposes of one-way and two-way voice translation, word spotting to detect and identify elements of conversation, and non-speech recognition and identification. The headset includes housings with form factors for insulating a user's ear from direct exposure to ambient sounds with at least one microphone for receiving sound around the user, and a microphone for receiving user speech. The user headset can further include interconnections for connecting the headset with out systems outside of the headset, including target designation systems, communication networks, and radio transmitters.

Abstract: An electronic device (100) with a dual display arrangement has a housing (110) with a first view port (115) and a second view port (119). The electronic device (100) also has a display module (150) with a first display (152) viewable through the first view port (115), a second display (155) viewable through the second view port (119), and a light guide (151) configured to direct light emitted by the second display (155) for use as backlighting for the first display (152). The dual display arrangement allows an organic electroluminescent display (OLED) second display (155) to serve as a backlight source for a liquid crystal display (LCD) first display (152) as well as operate as a viewable second display (155).

Abstract: A highly versatile interface that is capable of digital and audio signal coupling is provided. The interface comprises contacts (122, 124, 216, 218) that are used to couple both audio and digital signals, and separate contacts (126, 220) that are used initiate and negotiate signaling mode transitions. Transitions can be effected without creating glitches, e.g., audible noise, in audio signals that are being coupled through the interface.

Abstract: A display apparatus 200, a display controller 222, and a method for optimizing a displayed image for use in an electronic device 100 comprising a display 208 for presenting a visual image, a processor 212 for determining the intensity of a backlight 216 used for illuminating the display 208 and a controller 202 that optimizes the visual image corresponding to the intensity of the backlight 216 are described. As the intensity of the backlight 216 is reduced, the brightness of the pixels 210 is increased to compensate the image when, for example, the backlight intensity is reduced to save power. The method and apparatus are also described for compensating for uneven backlight 216 conditions.
