Abstract: A method for selling a replacement supply item according to one embodiment includes in response to a scan of an encoded uniform resource identifier provided on a supply item, identifying a product type and a source type of the scanned supply item. A web page specific to the identified product type of the scanned supply item is then displayed that facilitates ordering the replacement supply item. The displayed web page varies depending on the identified source type of the scanned supply item.

Abstract: A method for compressing data includes transmitting a requested compression factor such as a quality factor known in JPEG compression, to a scanner or like peripheral device. The type of communication link between the scanner or like device and a host computer is identified, and based on the communication link type, the requested compression factor is altered to generate a new compression factor subsequently used to compress the data. The amount of buffer, such as scan buffer, used by the scanner or peripheral device may also be used to alter the compression factor prior to compression.

Abstract: A method for effecting synchronous pulse generation for use in serial communications is provided. The method includes the steps of generating a difference signal representing a signal level difference between at least two data stream signals; providing a clock signal; providing a counter, defining a sample count value of the counter; incrementing the counter in relation to the clock signal; and determining whether a current count value of the counter corresponds to the sample count value. If the current count value corresponds to the sample count value, then the method performs a step of generating a synchronous pulse.

Abstract: A photoprinter configuration comprising a digital camera having a viewable display and one or more selection mechanisms. A photoprinter is connected to the digital camera via a communication link, wherein the photoprinter is operative to control the viewable display of the digital camera. Preferably, the photoprinter is further operative to direct the results from a user's inputs to the selection mechanisms of the digital camera. The photoprinter is operable as a client to a host computer, as a host for the digital camera, and a passthrough device such that the host computer may initiate requests to the digital camera.
