Abstract: Uniform-sized liposome populations can improve both the efficacy and safety of drug delivery. The present invention utilizes the techniques of extrusion with polycarbonate-membrane-based large-pore dialysis to create uniform-sized liposome populations. These uniform-sized liposome populations may comprise different sizes such that smaller liposome populations contain specific drugs that are compartmentalized within a larger liposome population. These uniform-sized liposomes can be lysed upon photoillumination and release the encapsulated drugs and/or smaller liposomes, and can be used as a new version of photodynamic therapy.
