    Abstract: Apparatus and method of controlling strip geometry in casting strip having a rolling mill. A target thickness profile is calculated as a function of the measured entry thickness profile of the strip while satisfying profile and flatness parameters. A differential strain feedback from longitudinal strain in the strip is calculated by a control system by comparing the exit thickness profile with the target thickness profile, and a control signal is generated to control a device capable of affecting the geometry of the strip processed by the hot rolling mill. A feed-forward control reference and/or sensitivity vector may also be calculated as a function of the target thickness profile, and used in generating the control signal sent to the control device. The pinch rolls are positioned one above the other with the axes of the pinch rolls offset in the direction of travel of the strip, with the upper pinch roll offset positioned between 10 and 130 mm downstream of the direction of travel of the strip through the pinch rolls. A rotational drive counter-rotates the pinch rolls to cause strip to pass through the nip of the pinch rolls. A tilt drive tilts the upper pinch roll by a tilt between 0.5 and 5.0 mm to control steering of the strip passing through the pinch rolls. The steering of the tilt drive may be automatically controlled through a controller actuated by a sensor.

    Abstract: A hot rolling mill and method for operating the hot rolling mill where the shape of the strip is controlled by localized cooling devices positioned at intervals along work rolls in at least three lateral zones, a central and two edge zones, and capable of separately cooling each zone to control the shape of the work rolls in that zone and inhibit the formation of shape defects occurring in the strip being rolled. Five zones may be provided across the work surface of the work rolls so that two intermediate zones can control for quarter buckles. The hot rolling mill has particular application in continuously casting thin strip. The method can be made automatic by sensing downstream of the hot mill the shape of the strip in each zone.
