  • Patent number: 9173138
Abstract: Methods for handoff of a multimode mobile station (MS). The MS, in connected mode, moves from a cell of a legacy base station to a cell of an ABS and scans base stations from a list of neighboring base stations, wherein at least the ABS is listed as another legacy base station in the list of neighboring base stations. The MS performs the handoff to connect to a legacy zone of the ABS. Further, the multimode MS switching from the legacy zone of the ABS to a advanced zone of the ABS based on a Zone Switch request or command is triggered by either the multimode MS or the ABS. The Zone Switch request is triggered after detecting capabilities of either the multimode MS or the ABS that they support advanced zone. The capabilities are detected by using MAC versions of the multimode MS and the ABS or an indicator for the advanced zone.

  • Patent number: 8249035
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a technique for enhanced parameter negotiation in Evolution-Data Optimized (EVDO) communication systems that use Generic Configuration Protocol to negotiate session parameters or session attributes. The technique reduces the number of parameter negotiation cycles involved during the session configuration process. A new AlternateValueAllowed field is added in the attribute record. The Configuration Request message sent by the initiator allows the Configuration Response message responder to send the responder's preferred attribute value to the initiator, when the Configuration Request message does not contain the preferred attribute value of the responder. Such a modified attribute record structure obviates the need for multiple attribute negotiation cycles, and therefore saves session negotiation time.

  • Patent number: 8220044
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for triggering re-negotiation of a session when an Access Terminal moves from one access network (source AN) to another access network (target AN) having different capabilities in high rate packet data system. According to an exemplary embodiment of the invention, the source AN is allowed to store all the protocol subtypes, protocols and applications that AT is capable of and also allowing the AT to send this information in priority order during session negotiation and hence facilitating the transfer of this information from source AN to target AN during session transfer when AT moves from one AN to another AN. An alternate embodiment is to let the AT send the protocol subtypes, protocols and applications and other AT capable information to target AN after it moves to a new AN or by letting the Rev-A capable AN query the AT's capability information and then the AT providing this information.

  • Patent number: 8199703
Abstract: The invention relates to telecommunication systems and in particular to a method and system for efficient connection setup procedure for mobile terminated calls. A method of connection setup for mobile terminated calls is proposed in which a page message originating from the access network contains one access sequence along with access terminal identity or unicast access terminal identifier (UATI) of the paged access terminal. When more than one access terminal uses the same access sequence for sending their access probe at the same time a collision may occur. Access network selects access sequences from a reserved pool to direct the paged access terminal for performing access attempt to avoid collisions during access attempts. With this resource pooling, there is no need to send bind request and hence connection setup time reduces.

  • Patent number: 8045521
Abstract: Interworking in a multi-protocol revision based Evolution Data Only/Evolution Data Optimized (EVDO) communication system is described. In this scheme, an access terminal (AT) and an access network (AN) perform session configuration in multi-protocol scenarios. The AT maintains a set indicating all the protocol revisions it supports. The AT and AN start their session negotiation with the subtypes corresponding to the highest protocol revision supported by AT and AN. There are two scenarios in which AT sends the Unicast Access Terminal Identifier (UATI) request message with protocol revisions: power up and idle handoff.
