  • Publication number: 20070077896
Abstract: An electronic toll collection system wherein the reader includes a switching network and a plurality of transceivers operating under the control of a controller. The reader further includes failure detection circuitry for determining whether any of the transceivers have failed based upon the RF outputs of the transceivers. If the controller determines that a transceiver has failed, then it alters the switching pattern such that the switching network excludes the failed transceiver from being connected to the antennas. The reader thereby provides for adaptive RF channel assignment, as the particular transceiver used to excite a particular antenna may be dynamically altered, and the provision of at least two transceivers in the reader ensures transceiver redundancy.

  • Patent number: 7199560
Abstract: Pulse width modulation of the connection of a load output terminal to a power supply terminal is effected. In response to a first level of the pulse width modulated signal, the load is disconnected from the power supply terminal, steady-state load voltage is preserved on a capacitor connected between a load output terminal and a power supply terminal, and steady-state load current information is held on a capacitor within the feedback loop. In response to a second level of the pulse width modulated signal, the load is reconnected to the power supply terminal, and load voltage and current instantaneously resume at their correct steady-state values.

  • Patent number: 7200402
Abstract: A method for performing a soft-handoff in a mobile streaming media system, and a method for performing a hard-handoff in a mobile streaming media system are is disclosed. In the soft-handoff embodiment, the present invention detects that a channel quality between a mobile client and a first base station remains above a drop threshold and that a channel quality between the mobile client and a second base station increases from below to above an add threshold. The present embodiment then sends a first multiple description bitstream from the first base station to the mobile client and sends a complementary second multiple description bitstream from the second base station to the mobile client. This method thereby provides improved utilization of wireless bandwidth during soft-handoffs, in contrast to conventional systems where the same bitstream is transmitted from each base station.

  • Patent number: 7199076
Abstract: In an embodiment, a method of hydrogenating a highly unsaturated hydrocarbon to an unsaturated hydrocarbon includes contacting the highly unsaturated hydrocarbon with a catalyst in the presence of hydrogen. The catalyst comprises palladium and an inorganic support having a surface area of from about 4.5 to about 20 m2/g, or alternatively 5 to 14.5 m2/g. The inorganic support may comprise ?-alumina treated with a fluoride source. The palladium may be primarily disposed near the surface of the support. In addition, the catalyst may comprise silver distributed throughout the support. In another embodiment, a method of making the foregoing selective hydrogenation catalyst includes contacting a fluorine-containing compound with an inorganic support, heating the support, and adding palladium to the inorganic support. After adding palladium to the support, the support can then be heated again, followed by adding silver to and then heating the support once again.

  • Patent number: 7200669
Abstract: A method and system for delivering data over a network to a large number of clients, which may be suitable for building large-scale Video-on-Demand (VOD) systems. In current VOD systems, the client may suffer from a long latency before starting to receive requested data that is capable of providing sufficient interactive functions, or the reverse, without significantly increasing the network load. The method utilizes two groups of data streams, one responsible for minimizing latency while the other provides the required interactive functions. In the anti-latency data group, uniform, or non-uniform or hierarchical staggered stream intervals may be used. The system may have a relatively small startup latency while users may enjoy most of the interactive functions that are typical of video recorders including fast-forward, forward-jump, and so on. Furthermore, the system can maintain the number of data streams, and therefore the bandwidth, required.

  • Patent number: 7197104
Abstract: An edge counter counting both rising and falling edges of an input signal is implemented with combinational logic, without using flip-flops. The combinational logic is designed using intermediate signals and state transitions producing an output signal having a cycle corresponding to a predetermined odd or even number of input signal edges, with the logic optimized and protected against entry into “stuck” states. A low power, low gate count edge counter is thus implemented with an output signal duty cycle at least as balanced as the input counter duty cycle.
