    Abstract: An ophthalmic lens comprises a transparent substrate and electro-optical means integrated with the substrate to perform an optical function in response to an electrical stimulus. The ophthalmic lens further comprises at least one photovoltaic cell integrated with the substrate to power the electro-optical means in response to an incident light, and optionally also a control circuit for controlling the electrical voltage. The photovoltaic cell may be incorporated in an opaque element occupying a small fraction of the area of the lens. Alternatively, the photovoltaic cell may be transparent and may cover at least a portion of the area of the lens.
